I laughed, cried, then laughed because I was crying. I sat on the closed toilet with the test in my hand and stared at it like a personally delivered message from heaven.
I was pregnant.
There had been an entire beginning happening inside me and I hadn’t known.
“Hi.”
The word slipped out and that made me cry harder.
I laughed at myself. “Girl, get it together.”
I didn’t even know how far along I was and had already mentally assigned the child a bedroom.
Caleb was going to lose his fucking mind. We’d talked about children and I knew what fatherhood meant to him. He’d spent years believing that dream had been delayed indefinitely.
And now— a baby. Our baby.
Maybe it was why everything had happened the way it did. Maybe God had taken us through all that mess because this was waiting on the other side. I knew how that sounded, but I didn’t care. I was so fucking happy.
I checked the time.
7:14.
Lunch felt six years away, but I canceled every obligation I had that day. Janelle texted me immediately.
Janelle: Are you sick?
Blair: Personal day.
Janelle: Everything okay?
I looked at the test and smiled.
Blair: Everything is perfect.
I DoorDashed four more tests. They were all positive. I lined them across the bathroom counter and laughed. “Okay, bitch. We get it.”
I wanted to call Klair, but Caleb deserved to know first. So instead, I went shopping. I didn’t know the sex, obviously, but I had to get something.
I bought a little gift box and filled it with tissue paper and a tiny pair of neutral baby socks that made me cry in the middle of the store. Then I saw a little onesie that said Hi Daddy. I didn’t even check the price, I just threw it in my cart!
I went home and arranged everything on the dining table. I took a picture and at 11:47, I texted him.
Blair: Still coming for lunch?
Caleb: Of course.
The front door opened at 12:06.
“Blair?”
“In here.”
I stood beside the dining table. My heart was trying to escape my chest. Caleb walked around the corner and stopped. His eyes went to the balloons then the box.
His eyebrows pulled together. “What is all this?”
I couldn’t stop smiling. “Come here.”
