It had been a long, long time since I’d felt like this.

Lately, it had been nothing but drama between Cade and Davix and that Crimson wolf.

The door to Java opened, and Cade backed out of it with two coffees in his hands and a brown bag between his teeth, looking like a wild animal. Warmth gathered between my thighs, and he inhaled sharply, eyes closing for a brief moment.

Once he handed me the coffee, he set the brown bag down in front of me and sat across from me, his gaze dropping from my face down to my chest. “Ember, I can smell how wet you are right now. And if I can smell it, so can everyone else here.”

My eyes widened, and I pressed my thighs together, cheeks flaming hot. “They can?”

“Yes.”

“But—”

His lips curled into a smirk. “Do you like that?”

“N-no!” I exclaimed, occupying myself with the banana bread. “You’re just … hot.”

“Hot?” He chuckled. “Me?”

“With this bag between your teeth … I might’ve been imagining something else between them. Okay?” I said, hiding behind my hair and trying not to make eye contact because I knew that’d just make me wetter.

He hummed and scanned the forest. Usually, he’d keep teasing and taunting me, but today, he was tense. He had been on edge since yesterday, when he disappeared for hours and didn’t come home at all.

“So, did you find those people you were looking for?” I asked.

“No.”

“Do you have any idea where they could be?”

“Davix has them,” he said, clamping his hand into a tight fist. “I know he does.”

“Why don’t you go over there?”

“I did. Searched everywhere in his prison, and I couldn’t find them.”

“What will happen if you don’t find them soon?” I asked.

“War.” He ran a hand through his hair. “A war that nobody in Black Hollows will survive. And it’s already started.”

Chapter Sixty

Ember

Daisy and Pumpkin ran around the backyard, chasing each other from one side to the other. I hummed to myself and drew my brush across the canvas, the moon my only source of light. Cade had gone to find the two men he was looking for, and Pavel was with his new girl.

He claimed up and down that she wasn’t his girlfriend, but I wasn’t buying it.

A twig snapped to my right, and when I glanced over, a hand immediately covered my mouth. My heart leaped inside my chest. Someone pressed their huge body against my back, and I immediately recognized the scent.

“I don’t know why they keep leaving you alone when there are bad people in Black Hollows,” the red-eyed wolf murmured against my ear, one of his hands gripping both my elbows behind my back. “Bad, bad people.”

I sucked in a sharp breath, my nipples hardening. “Are you one of them?”

A low chuckle left his mouth. “Depends on who you ask.”

“Cade and Davix think so. You know who they are.”

“Is that a question?”
