“Daddy.”

“Give her a second.”

“She don’t look busy.”

“She’s talking to someone.”

Mila watched for all of three seconds before letting go of me and hurrying toward the children’s section.

“Walk,” I called.

She slowed without looking back.

I stayed near the front while Luna finished the transaction. She tucked the books into a paper bag, added a bookmark, and walked around the counter to hold the door open for the customer when her hands were full.

“Come back and tell me what you think of the third one,” she said.

“I will.”

Luna waited until the woman stepped outside before turning back toward the register.

Then she noticed me.

Recognition crossed her face before a smile followed.

“Hi.”

“Hey.”

Her eyes moved past me toward the children’s section. “You brought company.”

“My daughter.”

Before I could say anything else, Mila appeared at the end of the aisle holding a book in each hand.

“I found them.”

Luna looked at her. “Dinosaurs?”

Mila nodded.

“That was fast.”

“I’m good at books.”

“I can see that.”

Luna walked toward her and crouched beside the shelf rather than asking Mila to come closer.

“What do you have?”

Mila held up the first book. “This one got facts.”

“And the other one?”

“This one got a dinosaur who don’t got friends.”

Luna studied the cover. “That sounds serious.”
