“It is.”

“Which one do you like better?”

Mila looked between them.

“Both.”

Luna nodded like that was a perfectly reasonable answer. “That does make the decision harder.”

“I can get both.”

It wasn’t a question.

I folded my arms. “You can pick one.”

Mila’s face fell immediately.

Luna glanced at me, then back at her.

“What if you start with the one you think you’ll read first?”

Mila looked down at the books again. “The sad one.”

“The dinosaur without friends?”

“Yes.”

“Good choice.”

Mila handed the fact book back to Luna reluctantly.

Luna returned the fact book to the shelf, then noticed another book angled halfway out of the display beside her.

“This one isn’t about dinosaurs,” she said, sliding it back into place, “but it does have a dragon.”

Mila’s attention shifted.

“A real dragon?”

“As real as the dinosaurs in your story.”

Mila took the book and opened it immediately.

I watched Luna sit back on her heels while Mila turned the first few pages, giving her the same undivided attention I’d watched her give people Tuesday night.

She didn’t talk down to her.

She didn’t rush her.

She simply waited.

Mila looked up. “Can I get this one too?”

I sighed.

Luna pressed her lips together, but the smile still showed.

“You’re not helping,” I told her.
