I looked toward the kitchen.
Renee was standing in the doorway.
“She asked nicely.”
“She already had cake.”
“And now she has cake for tomorrow.”
Mila smiled up at me.
I shook my head. “Go get your jacket.”
She headed toward the chair where she left it earlier.
“Thank you for having us,” I told Renee.
“You don’t have to thank me. I enjoyed having y’all.”
Marcus came in from the kitchen behind her. “Drive safe.”
“I will.”
He held out his hand, but this time when I took it, he used the other to clap me once on the shoulder.
“Good meeting you, Ellis.”
“You too.”
“And next time, I’ll show you the rest of the setup outside.”
Luna groaned from behind me.
“Daddy.”
“What?”
“You already showed him the grill.”
“Not everything.”
I looked at her. “There’s more?”
“Don’t ask.”
Marcus smiled.
“I’ll see it next time.”
Luna stared at me.
I laughed.
Mila came back with her jacket on, the container of cake tucked beneath one arm.
“Ready?”
She nodded.
