Luna caught it too.

“Somebody’s sleepy.”

“I’m not.”

“You just yawned.”

“I was breathing.”

I looked at Luna.

She pressed her lips together.

Mila looked between us. “Can I have more cake?”

“No.”

Her shoulders dropped.

Renee opened her mouth.

I pointed at her. “Don’t.”

She closed it again, smiling.

“Thank you.”

Marcus leaned back in his chair. “You might as well give up.”

“On what?”

He nodded toward his wife.

“She’s gonna feed that baby every time she comes over.”

Every time.

I glanced toward Luna and found her already looking at me.

Neither of us said anything about it.

We didn’t have to.

Because somewhere between walking through the front door and sitting there with an overly full six-year-old who was fighting sleep, this had stopped feeling like a first visit.

And apparently, without any of us discussing it, there was already going to be a next one.

By the time we were ready to leave, Mila had somehow talked Renee into wrapping up two pieces of cake for us to take home.

I found out when she came into the living room carrying a plastic container with both hands.

“What’s that?”

“Cake.”

“I can see that.”

“Miss Renee said we could take some.”
