“I promise,” she said.

Then they stopped talking and fell into each other once again.

Sixteen

It was close to midnight when reality set back in. They’d just made love for the third time, and he was spooning her while they caught their breath.

“I don’t want to leave, but I probably should.”

“Otherwise, Fran will wonder where you are.”

“Which is why I’m anxious to get my own place.”

“So you can seduce women without her knowing.”

“So I can seduce you.”

She smiled, though he couldn’t see her face.

“You’re like the male version of Cinderella,” she teased, watching the clock on her nightstand turn twelve.

“I would stay, but I know you’re worried about what Fran will think about us being together.”

“Not just Fran.”

He winced at the reminder, and she turned to face him. “I’m just being honest.”

He brushed her hair off her face. “I know.”

“I’ve been with the company a long time, and I’ve earned the respect of most of the people I work with. I don’t want to lose that.”

He nodded, though he still looked pained.

“It’s easier for men. They earn respect simply by being men. Women have to work harder for it.”

“But you would have gone out with Eric.”

She smoothed her hands over his chest. “That’s different. You’re my trainee, and I’m in the position of evaluating you. If people know we are…together and I give you a good evaluation, they’ll assume that was why.”

“Or maybe they’ll just think I’m good in bed,” he teased.

“They’d be right.”

“So, I suppose this means we have to hide from everyone.”

“At least during your training period.” Who knew what would happen after that?

He sighed. “I can handle that as long as we get to see each other outside of the office.”

“We’ll just have to be careful that nobody sees us.”

“It’ll be like hide and seek for adults.”

She envisioned them hiding behind bushes and chuckled.

“I’m moving into the apartment tomorrow, so at least we’ll have another place to go.”

“Um-hmm.” She liked the idea of spending time with him there. In fact, she liked the idea of being with him anywhere.
