He chuckled. “That’s just because I was fresh meat. They’re over it now.”

I’m not.

He shifted them to their sides. Then he trailed a hand down her arm to her hip. “I’m glad I trusted my instinct and came over tonight.”

“Me too.”

“I was afraid you wouldn’t let me in.”

The irony wasn’t lost on her that she’d literally let him in. She reached up and cupped his cheek, feeling giddy that she could.

“I couldn’t stand the thought of you going out with Eric tomorrow night.”

She’d practically forgotten about Eric. Her face fell, and she removed her hand from his cheek.

“You’re not still going, are you?” His brow furrowed, and he searched her eyes beseechingly.

She scrunched up her face and could practically feel the wrinkles forming as she lay there. “I don’t want to.”

He heaved a sigh. “Good.”

“But…maybe I should.”

Frowning, he dropped his hand from her hip. “Why?”

“What reason do I have to cancel?”

“Me! Us!” He jabbed his finger into his chest so hard that she worried it might leave a bruise.

“I can’t tell Eric that.”

“So, make something up.”

“Like what?”

He glared at the ceiling. “I don’t know. Say you have to visit someone in the hospital. A great-aunt or someone.”

She understood his jealousy, but it was completely unwarranted. She had no intention of doing anything with Eric besides eating dinner. She tried to reason with him.

“It would just be dinner. It wouldn’t be any different than when you and I had lunch together the first time.”

“You’ve got to be kidding! You don’t even want to know what I was thinking about when we were having lunch.”

“That doesn’t mean Eric will think the same thing.”

He raised his brows. “Have you looked in the mirror lately? I mean really looked. You’re a beautiful woman, Stacy. He wouldn’t have asked you out unless he wanted to be with you.”

She wriggled closer to him and placed her hands on his warm chest. “But I don’t want to be with him.”

Cupping her face in his hands, he said, “Then don’t go tomorrow. Be with me instead.”

She hated to lie to Eric, but Nick was right. How could she go out with him when her heart wasn’t in it? It wouldn’t be fair to any of them, especially after what had transpired between her and Nick.

As if he’d sensed her agreement, he leaned in and gently kissed her lips, and then he nudged them apart with his tongue. She slid her arms around his neck and fervently returned his kiss.

Hardly any time had passed since they’d made love, but her body was already responding. Her cells had reawakened and were doing a happy dance.

He trailed his hand down and cupped her mound. “Promise me you won’t go.” He dipped a finger into her wetness, and she sucked in a breath.
