“I’ll pick you up around two and we’ll go get him. Does that work?”
She nods, tipping her chin up and kissing me. “It does. I don’t have anything pressing at the lab, or lectures to teach this afternoon or tomorrow morning, so I’ll be here to get Denver settled.”
“And I’ll come over after the game tonight.”
She hugs me closer and I breathe her in deeply. “See you soon, baby.”
My first stop is the Thunder facilities. Last night, I texted Rafe, the head coach, and Dom, the CEO. I let them know about Foxxy’s accident and promised to update them this morning.
The meeting with the two of them goes as expected. Grim faces are all around as we face the rest of the season without our top pitcher. Sure, we’ve got other guys who are good, but none of them are like Foxxy. Dixie came close, but now he’s pitching in the big leagues.
We make a plan for me to start doing some extra sessions with some of the relievers, and I exit Dom’s office to head down to the weight room for a conditioning session. I get as far as the locker room when my phone rings with a call from my sister.
Stepping out into the hall, I lean against the wall and answer. “Hey Janey, what’s up?”
“Hey, big bro. Um, I have something kinda crazy to tell you.”
“Me too, actually,” I blurt out.
“Wait, you do? No, hold on. I have to go first. It’s important.”
Her voice sounds stressed, and my heart sinks. “Spit it out, Janey.”
“It’s actually sort of a good thing, but it does make things complicated,” she starts, and I clench my teeth together to stop from barking at her to hurry up and tell me. “Mom gave Dad divorce papers. She’s done.”
“Holy shit,” I say, my hand coming to the top of my head. “Seriously?”
“Yup. And in a shocking twist, Dad’s not fighting her. For once, he’s not being a total selfish prick.”
“Damn.” My head is spinning. I may have distanced myself from my parents a long time ago, but that doesn’t make this come as any less of a shock.
“Right?” She blows out a breath. “Anyway. What’s your crazy news? Can’t be as bad as mine.”
“Not far off. Foxxy had surgery last night for a clavicular fracture.”
“Oh no,” she gasps. “What happened?”
Another chuckle escapes me as I shake my head. “You won’t believe it. He fell out of a goddamn tree trying to rescue a cat.”
“Oh my god.” Janey snorts. “Only Foxxy. Maybe I should come out there and play nurse for him.”
Even though I know she’s joking, and has never once been attracted to Foxxy, I still push off the wall, clenching my fists. “He’s taken.”
“Really?” she says, intrigue colouring her tone. “Who the heck tamed that wild child?”
I close my eyes and take a deep breath. “Her name is Olivia. She’s our buddy Kyle’s younger sister. And…” Here I go. I didn’t plan on being the first person to out our relationship, but Janey’s my sister. More than that, she’s the only person outside of Foxxy, and maybe now Olivia, who really gets me. “I’m dating her, too.”
“Wait. What?” Janey sounds confused, then her voice rises literally an entire octave. “Oh my god, are you bisexual? Are you and Foxxy finally out of the closet?”
“How the hell did you jump to that conclusion?” I bite out sharper than I intended. “No, Janey, I’m not with him. I’m with Olivia. And so is he. That’s it.”
“Wow.”
“Yeah.” I chuckle dryly. “Wow.”
For several seconds, there’s silence between us. Then my sister speaks.
“I’m happy for you, Griffin. You deserve a great love. I hope that’s what this is, or what this becomes.”
