“Where does the tunnel lead?”

Nathan’s answer chilled me.

“To the sea.”

“But Mom’s in San Francisco, or she was.”

The phone vibrated again.

Another message appeared.

MIDNIGHT.

KE ALA PIER.

BRING THE JOURNAL ALONE.

NO COAST GUARD.

NO SEALS.

Beneath it was a timer.

One hour.

“They want us at the pier,” Ben said.

“Which means Eleanor isn’t there,” Nathan answered.

Ward nodded.

“The pier is the exchange point. They’ll be watching whoever carries the journal.”

“And while they’re watching the pier,” Nathan said, “we go through the lava tunnel.”

Ward studied him.

“You’ve been inside it?”

“Once.”

“When?”

“The week Storm’s father died.”

Silence fell across the damaged salon.

I stared at Nathan.

“You knew Dad had gone to the cannery?”

“I knew he was investigating it.”

“Why didn’t you tell us before now?”

“Because I promised James I wouldn’t.”

“Grandpa knew?”
