"You okay?"
"I'm straight."
"You don't seem straight."
I forced a half smile.
"I'm just tired."
She studied me for another second before nodding. "If you say so."
She picked up her purse and slung it over her shoulder. "I'll see you tonight."
"Drive safe."
"I always do."
She started toward the bedroom door.
"Kai."
She turned around. "Yeah?"
"I love you."
Her smile softened.
"I love you too."
She disappeared down the hallway a few seconds later, and I listened until I heard the front door close behind her. I stayed in bed another minute before sitting up and rubbing my face. Soon as I reached for my phone, I turned it back on. The screen barely finished loading before it started going crazy. I had a few text messages from Talia. At times she could do too much. I just told her ass I would be over there. But that didn’t stop her from texting me anyway. I let out a slow breath and shook my head.
"Fuck!"
I tossed the phone onto the bed and sat there for a minute, staring at the floor. A small part of me knew I should've stayed my ass home. I felt bad as hell about what I was doing, especially after laying next to Kaior all morning. But feeling guilty wasn't enough to stop me. I got up, grabbed my keys, and headed out the door.
CHAPTER SEVEN
The penthouse was quiet. Floor-to-ceiling windows stretched across the back wall, overlooking the Fort Lauderdale beach, as the morning sun bounced off the water. The city was already moving while I stood barefoot in my office with a cup of black coffee, going over numbers from the weekend.
Across from me, Poncho sat behind one of the chairs with a laptop balanced on his knees while Hulk leaned against the wall with his arms folded across his chest. Hulk was six-three, three hundred and thirty pounds, and built like somebody had carved him out of granite. Most people noticed his size first, but the smart ones noticed his hands. He had a mean right hook that ended enough fights to earn his own reputation. Hulk wasn't much of a talker, and he didn't have to be. Fear usually handled introductions before he ever opened his mouth.
"The codes are changed," Hulk said, not looking up from his phone. "The whole building, elevator, front door, and service entrance. Nobody getting up here unless you let 'em up yourself."
"Good."
Poncho leaned back in his chair and started laughing. "Boy ain't no fuckin' way."
"That’s what the fuck I said," I chuckled. Last night it wasn’t funny, but I can laugh now.
"I can’t believe this bitch was in here waiting on you naked," he laughed.
"Her ass crazier than a muthafucka."
"You told that girl it was over. She said, bet then broke into your penthouse."
"I ain't say she broke in."
He raised a brow.
