Jenna’s heart sped up. She swallowed and lifted her chin.

With their youngest child squished between them, his lips crashed against hers. Instead of pushing him away, she opened her mouth and welcomed his tongue. As he deepened the kiss, her legs grew weak.

Footsteps distracted her.

Kylie halted halfway down the stairwell. “Mom? Dad?”

The spell Jenna had been under broke. She ran the back of her hand over her mouth.

A second later, Ethan bounded down the stairs and ran around the living room. He jumped between his parents and clasped his father around the knees. “Daddy!”

Matt ruffled Ethan’s hair. “Hey, sport.”

Father and son beamed at each other with matching eyes.

“Hey, guys, why don’t you carry your bags to the car? I want to talk to your mom for a minute,” Matt said.

Ethan and Kylie grabbed their belongings.

“Give me a hug,” Jenna called to their backs. Ethan was too busy staggering onto the porch beneath his heavy load to respond.

“It’s one weekend, Mom.” Kylie rolled her eyes.

“Give me a hug.” Jenna thought Kylie might also ignore her, but her daughter sighed and gave her a half-hearted embrace. Accepting whatever affection she could get, she kissed Kylie on the forehead.

Once their two oldest children were gone, Matt cleared his throat. “So, the new nanny starts on Monday?”

“Yes.” Jenna avoided eye contact.

“How did your dad’s surgery go?”

“Stacie called about thirty minutes ago. It seems to have gone really well. She’s going to text me when he wakes up.”

“I can check on him this weekend if you want?”

Jenna kissed Lisa’s soft finger. “He’d probably like that.”

“Jenna?”

She finally met his gaze.

“Is there another man in your life right now?”

She snorted. “Why would you think that?” Furthermore, why would he care? He hadn’t paid a lick of attention to her for the past year. And now he stood in front of her, possessive and toying with her emotions.

“Well, for one thing, you did your hair. And for another, there’s something different about you. Something sexy and almost dangerous.”

She’d forgone her ponytail to coat her shoulder-length hair with mousse before blowing it dry. Although she had no idea how one acted incredulous, she attempted it with a wrist flick and a nose crinkle. “I doubt Berta counts as a man. And McMurry is sixty, married, and ill-tempered.”

Matt rubbed his chin. “Keep in touch. I worry about you when you’re in the city.”

“Okay,” she promised for the kids’ sake.

“When you get back, let’s talk and continue where we left off.” While running his finger over her swollen lips, he licked his own. Then he swung the diaper bag over his shoulder and grabbed Lisa’s pink suitcase. “I miss waking up beside you.”

Jenna waved at her baby as they walked away. She closed the front door, leaned against the wooden frame, and steadied her breathing. “What the hell?”

Insane! She’d kissed the fool and liked it.
