“Okay.” She nodded. “I promise.”
“Good.”
CHAPTER 30
MYOME
“So, what do you think?” I looked at Drix who had one hand beneath his chin while he bobbed his head to the song I played for him.
“I like it.” He reached forward and paused. “Whose instrumental did you end up going with?”
“Honestly? My dad’s.”
“Your dad’s?” he repeated.
“That’s right. He, uh, he gave me this instrumental the last time we talked.”
“Well it’s good. He produces?”
“He plays a few instruments but I haven’t known him to really produce a lot of things honestly. By the time I was old enough to really comprehend how music is made, he was nice and retired. I’ve never even seen him perform in person. I just heard about his old glory days.” I shrugged.
“Well if y’all make up and he’s ever looking for work, I’m sure we can find him a spot on the team producing.”
“Shut up.” I laughed.
“I’m serious.” He shrugged. “But I have to ask… Did you get anything in writing?”
“For the instrumental?”
“Yeah.”
“Nope. He just handed me the flash drive.”
“Okay. Well, if there’s even a chance you’ll want to put this track out, we’re going to need him to sign it over to us, Yo. I’m not saying he’d try to sue us but…”
“But my family isn’t exactly known for being good people when it comes to money.”
“I didn’t say that.”
“You didn’t have to.” I forced a smile. “I get it. Genuinely. I’ll see if I can get him to come in and sign something. Do you have a contract?”
“Yeah. Give me a little. I’ll go up and grab something.”
“Thank you.”
“Welcome.” Drix paused at the door and looked at me. “The song is amazing, baby,” he reiterated.
“Thank you.” A huge, goofy grin took over my face.
I leaned forward and restarted it once the door closed behind Drix. I danced a little in my seat and sang along while it played and mentally prepared myself to call my father.
I truly did love the song. It was worth an awkward conversation.
I shook my hands out, grabbed my phone, and made the call.
My dad answered after two short rings.
“Myome?”
