“Rough. But Samuel and Tobias are taking the lead on it. Making the body disappear. Dr. Singh understands why. She knew more about her partner’s illicit activities than she let on.She even knew he had a memory card in his shoulder with names, dates, and payment information for all of his jobs.”

I sit up and stare at him. “Even the one he got the voice recorder from?”

Victor drags a hand through his hair. “I honestly don’t know yet. Owen is swamped with trying to find footage of the shooter.”

My heart rate ramps up. “Was it another sniper?”

Victor stares at me. “Yes. I’m sorry it’s starting to look that way.”

“Does Trinity know?”

“Not yet, but Hunter is aware, so he’ll tell her when he thinks it’s the right time.”

That makes me roll my eyes. “Because you men have such an excellent track record of telling your partners things they need to know.”

Victor chuckles and kisses my forehead. “I guess I deserved that.”

“When can I see Phineas? I’m ready to put him behind me, but I need to see him one more time before I can do that. Then you can do what you want with him.”

Victor stands. “I should go check on things out there. If it’s safe, I’ll take you tomorrow.”

As the door closes, I try to imagine what it will be like to confront my husband, knowing it will likely be the last time I see him alive.

Chapter 38

Victor

“Ican’tbelieveyou’reletting her do this,” Grace snaps at me as we walk toward the club’s exit.

It’s the day after the summit, but our halls are still filled with those who attended because we don’t know who shot Jacob and why. But it feels important to keep my promise to take Liliana to see Phineas.

“She needs some closure, Grace. Let her do what she needs to do.”

Grace sighs. “Intellectually, I understand that. But he cut her. He tried to have her killed. Trinity got shot because his snipers thought she was Liliana. And that’s since we’ve known her. How are you going to make sure he doesn’t attack her?”

I glance at Lili.

“First of all, she’s taking a gun in there with her. Second, there will be guards with sniper rifles trained at his fucking head ready to pull the trigger if he tries anything.”

“I want a knife,” Lili says, matter-of-factly.

I glare at her. “A gun is better.”

“I don’t like guns. I’m more comfortable wielding a knife if I need to hurt someone.”

I shake my head. “Fine. As long as you’re good with hurting someone if you have to.”

Grace lets out a huff and shakes her head. “This conversation is ridiculous. He better not get close enough to her for that to be an issue.”

I pull Grace into my arms.

“Look at me, Mariposa. It’s going to be OK. You have my word that nothing will happen to Lili today. Is that enough?”

She sighs and lays her head against my chest. “Yeah. That’s enough. I trust that you’ll keep her safe. I just hate everything he has already put her through.”

“Me too, sweetheart.”

“You realize I’m standing right here, right?”
