After we showered, we were back in the bed with him cuddled up under me. With him on my chest, I felt like this was where he wanted to be. I felt safe with him, but I could only wonder how he felt while he was with me.

Sleep found us quicker than we realized.

“It smells good, but do it taste good?” Paxton had finally made it downstairs.

Last night we had a time and this morning I was showing my appreciation. I wanted him to know that he was someone I was developing feelings for.

“Not better than me, but it’ll satisfy you,” I smirked as he walked up behind me wrapping an arm around my waist.

“I’m satisfied just with being here baby. Everything else is a plus.”

That gentle kiss sent electric currents through my body. Paxton was the perfect gentleman and everything he did was exactly how Trust started out. A part of me wanted to believe he was different, but I didn’t know what to truly expect from him. What glittered wasn’t always gold.

“Have a seat baby. I’ll fix your plate.”

As he went to walk off, the doorbell went off. I wasn’t expecting company and Brendon wasn’t due to be home until tomorrow afternoon. I was confused on who could be popping up unannounced.

“You want me to get that?”

“No baby. You take this, and I’ll get the door.”

I handed over his meal and headed for the front door. No one was there any longer, but a gift bag was sitting on the porch with a set of flowers. I glanced back toward the kitchen thinking maybe it was a surprise from Paxton, but he never surfaced.

Opening the door, I bent down and retrieved the items. I brought them inside but didn’t go pass the table in the foyer. I instantly started searching through the bag when I came across a card. I didn’t bother to read it until after I inspected what was in the velvet box.

The box was small, but it was from one of my favorite jewelry spots in the mall. My thoughts diverted to Trust and Trust only. Trust wasn’t balling like me, but he had enough to do for me and I appreciated it so much coming from him because of his financial status.

What the fuck?

When I opened the box, I was looking at a beautiful princess cut diamond ring. It was the ring I would never forget. Trust always told me that when I became his wife, that would be the ring that sealed the deal.

The card was going to have to explain more. I quickly pulled it out and got to reading.

I’m the last person you want to speak to or even see. I hurt you in the worst possible way and for that I accept everything you say and do to me. I’m man enough to admit that you were never the problem baby. Me and my childish ways caused our bond to break, and I regret every single thing that caused you pain. However, when I told you I loved you and you would be my wife, I meant that. This common law shit ain’t real enough for me. This isn’t half of what I want to apologize for or explain, but if you’ll accept my ring then that means you’re accepting my proposal. You can find me at our favorite hotel in the same suite we always get, tonight. Whether it’s you saying yes or no, I need you to do it in person.

“Fuck!”

“What’s wrong baby? You straight?” I had zoned out not realizing Paxton was still in attendance.

“I’m good. Just give me one second.”

I took the gifts and rushed them upstairs and out of sight. Paxton and I were doing so good and now Trust threw a wrench into the equation. He knew how I felt and about that ring, him, and us as a whole. He was toying with me.

“Baby where you at?”

Paxton called out for me, and I scurried down to him. I didn’t need any more confusion added on to the pile I was already dealing with.

“Right here. Sorry, it was a package Dawn had delivered here.” The lie seemed to roll off my tongue effortlessly.

“Oh okay. What you doing later? I was thinking we could go catch a movie or something. Just spend time where there isn’t a bed.”

I chuckled off his comment but understood why he said what he said. Ever since we connected at my event, we had seized every opportunity to become one. We could use some fresh air.

“I’m free baby. We can definitely do that. If something comes up, I’ll be sure to let you know ahead of time.”

“Cool. I have to head home, go by the office, and handle some paperwork. I should be done by six. Just hit me when you’re ready.”
