She frowned. “And if I remember, and I’m okay with the risk? Then what?”
“Then we’re right where we were when we split up,” he said, his heart cracking.
His phone rang, and he had to force himself to drag his gaze free to look at the screen. “It’s Harris.” He answered and listened as she updated him on the blood found on the sheet at Addy’s house. “You’re sure?” he asked.
“Positive,” Harris said and ended the call.
Mack shoved the phone back into his pocket.
“News?” Addy asked.
He nodded. “DNA taken from the blood on the sheet and knitting needle—the results are back from the lab. It’s official. The blood belongs to Zamora. He’s the jerk who took Nancy and your mother hostage.”
Chapter 14
SITTING IN THE MINIVAN,Addy tugged on an itchy blond wig. She didn’t like the wig, but she had to admit being blond was fun. Especially with the way Mack had looked at her before they’d left the safe house. She’d warmed to her soul under his intoxicating study. Had she worn a blond wig in the past and it was bringing back memories, or did he just enjoy the hair color change? Maybe in an hour or so she would remember their past and know the answer to that question.
She glanced at him, sitting next to her in the back of the van as they whisked down the treelined road. His intense focus said he couldn’t care less about her hair right now. He had his head on a swivel, watching every inch of their progress. Riding shotgun, Kiley was doing the same thing. Even Sean was hyperalert while driving.
They’d left Cam back at the house. As an analyst, he didn’t carry and couldn’t provide protection. He’d cast a longing look at them when they exited. If Addy was right, he wanted to be in the thick of things. Maybe he wanted to be an agent. She might soon know the answer to that and remember all these wonderful people too.
She looked around the van. What secrets or insights had they revealed about their personalities to her in the past? Since seeing them again, Kiley had shown herself to be sweet, if awkward. Sean, a straight shooter who seemed intense and by the book. And Mack? He was proving to be the guy she’d always imagined being with. The kind of man she could see herself marrying.
He caught her eye and smiled. A tight, nearly forced number, but still devastating to her heart. She was falling for him for sure. She shouldn’t be surprised. Not when she’d married him once before.
He looked away, and her mind went to Zamora. Maybe she would remember him in the hypnosis and know how to find him. Mack was sure the guy would lead them to Razo, so she would tell the doctor that it was a priority to focus on. Not that she thought you could list out things you wanted to remember, but still, she hoped they could emphasize that because time was disappearing faster than she could imagine, and they had to make some progress soon. Just had to.
They approached the medical facility, and she became alert, her hand resting on her sidearm. Warren had done a thorough threat assessment of the building for Mack, taking pictures and drawing a rough layout so that Mack could plan their arrival. She was so thankful for how her fellow agents were cooperating with the RED team, even taking a backseat when needed.
Sean pulled into the center’s secured parking area and punched a number provided by the administrator into a silver keypad. The gate lifted, emitting a high-pitched squeal that grated on Addy’s already tight nerves. Sean wound up the ramp to a private elevator. Kiley hopped out and called the elevator car to their floor.
“Okay. We’re a go.” Mack looked at Addy. “Straight inside the car. Kiley and I’ll be with you all the way. Once you’re settled in the office, I’ll stay with you, and Kiley will join Sean out front for your return trip. We good?”
She nodded, though her heart was thundering in her chest and warning her not to get out and expose herself to a potential gunshot. Still, she opened the door and slid out. She had to forthe investigation. For the people who might die if she didn’t try to remember. Mack came to her side of the car, pulled her close, and hurried her into the elevator. Kiley took one last look outside and closed the SUV door. Addy saw Sean drive off before the elevator doors whisked closed.
Mack let out a long breath. He obviously felt the same stomach-clenching tension she was experiencing. The doors opened on the third floor, and Mack took her arm again. She didn’t protest but stayed by his side, her hand ready to go for her gun if needed. They moved through the hallways at top speed, Mack knowing exactly where they were going.
They arrived at the doctor’s office, where he stopped outside the door.
“I’ll check it out,” Kiley said and stepped into the office.
“Can I take this wig off now?” Addy asked. “I’ll put it back on when we leave, but I want to be my real self for this.”
“Sure,” Mack said.
She jerked the irritating wig free and stuffed it into her handbag. She shook out her hair and finger-combed it. Mack reached out to move a strand crossing her face, and their eyes met. Interest and longing deepened the blue of his eyes. She couldn’t gauge the intensity of his feelings, as she was only getting to know him, but his obvious interest touched her deeply, an unseen force drawing her to him.
She took a step closer. He sucked in a sharp breath and held her gaze. She wanted to touch him. To kiss him. To find out what they had together. She inched closer, slowly, savoring his gaze as she moved. He reached out and circled her waist with his powerful arms, and it felt as if he was calling her home. Calling her to where she belonged but hadn’t yet known it.
The door opened, and Kiley stepped out.
Mack’s hands fell to his side, and Addy moved quickly back. A hot flush crept up her neck and over her face. How had she allowed herself to be caught in a compromising position?
Kiley’s eyes traveled between them, a wide smile spreading across her face. “Sorry to interrupt, but all’s clear.”
Mack nodded and gulped in air as he gestured for Addy to go in.
“I say you two should go for it.” Kiley patted him on the arm.
