He sighed again. “While you have all the facts, they’re going to twist them until you look like a gold digger out for my money.”
“I don’t care,” I blurted. “I just … I just want them to leave you alone.”
Trent stared at me for several long seconds and I wasn’t sure what he was thinking. Probably that I’d lost my mind. Finally, he said, “It’s not just you they’ll go after. Your family won’t be safe. If they have anything hidden in their past, it’s going to come to light.”
“Oh.” That didn’t sound like fun.
“And they’ll confront your family directly,” he added.
I smiled at that. “I’m sure my mother will give them a piece of her mind.” She’d already run them off once. I was sure she would do it again.
“Yeah?” His blue eyes sparkled with mischief. “So you told her about me?”
“Not exactly.” I couldn’t help but laugh. “I mean, she knows we’re friends.”
“Oh, sunshine, we’re so much more than friends.”
“Okay, fine. If you think it’ll help, I can call her and tell her about us.”
Trent seemed shocked by my suggestion. “All three of us? You’re going to tell her about the relationship you have with Troy, too?”
Hmm. For whatever reason, that hadn’t occurred to me.
“Because that is where this is going. I promise, after I make a few calls, I’ll explain what’s going on. And if you seriously want to go public, I’ve got a friend who will sit down with us and do an article. I’m sure she’ll know a way to spin this in the most romantic light possible so anyone who tries to stir up drama will have to deal with the wrath of the public.”
More heat infused my face. I hadn’t expected that. What would happen when this was publicly confirmed? Our relationship. The three of us. What would people think? When they found out I was in a relationship with two men, would they think I was a slut? Me and Trent. Trent and Troy. Me and Troy. There were many variations and Trent was right, I wasn’t sure anyone would understand.
No.
I shook my head to clear my brain.
I didn’t care what people thought. This wasn’t about them. If Trent and Troy were willing to stand up and lay claim to this relationship, then so was I.
This was all new for me, but the one thing I knew with absolute certainty was that I intended to see this through, to give everything to these men.
Trent pushed to his feet and peered down at Troy, who was sitting beside me. “I want you to reach out to McKenna Murphy. She’s a journalist out of Dallas. A good friend of mine. I trust her. Let her know what’s going on and tell her I’d like her to sit down with us for a story. Soon. Tell her I’ll call her tonight when I have more information and we can set up a time.”
“Sure, Master. I’ll call her right now.”
Okay then. That was settled.
Although settled didn’t seem like the right word.
Trent
“THANKS, MCKENNA. TELL TAG I’LL catch up with him when I’m back in town. Let me know if you need anything else from us,” I told the reporter who’d become a friend over the years.
“Will do. And Trent, I think it’s a good idea to hire a couple of bodyguards to keep an eye on them. Not only because this is going to make front-page news, but also because of the controversy associated with … well, with your lifestyle. I’m worried the crazies are going to come out.”
“One step ahead of you. I’ve got several in place and a few more as backup in the event they’re needed.”
“Awesome. Thanks for trusting me with this. I won’t let you down. I’m gonna start by putting out a statement that I’ve landed an exclusive interview with you directly. That should get some of the big media off your back for the time being.”
“You know how it works better than I do.”
“I wouldn’t say that,” she said with a laugh. “But I do know how to spin a story and this is likely going to be my biggest yet.”
In my world, I had learned to build alliances, even with those who could be considered my enemy. I’d learned a long time ago it wouldn’t fare well for me to piss off everyone. McKenna was a journalist and though I wasn’t cozy with reporters, I trusted her to do right by me.
“Like I said, we’re in Chicago for the time being. If you need anything, holler. If you can’t reach me, call Troy directly.”
“Will do. You’ll be hearing from me soon.”
After disconnecting the call, I glanced over at Troy and Clarissa.
They looked cozy curled up on the sofa watching television.
Since we landed a few hours ago, I’d hustled them to the apartment with the help of four bodyguards who’d treated our trip as though I was the fucking president. No one even got close enough to grab a picture, so I considered today a success.
