A chuckle rolls through me as I notice ribbons braided through her trademark pigtails, tidy little bows tied at the bottom, white this time, appropriate for today, although some people might disagree as to whether she gets to wear white. It’s her day. She can do whatever she wants, just like every day.

She makes her way to the front of the church and takes her place opposite the three of us. We move through the vows until it’s time for me to say mine.

“Wendy, you already know this, but I’m committing to it in front of everyone. I will be there for you for the entirety of your life, and beyond if I can figure out how. I no longer need to be the only man for you. And I never thought I’d say that in my wedding vows. It’s just proof that you’re special. You make me a better person, and I’m proud to stand up here and promise to take on the role of best husband ever.”

Grumblings come from my brothers, but I ramble on nervously, since this is uncharted territory for me, being in front of people, exposing myself. Apparently, I have some desire to keep her all to myself as I feel like spending the rest of my life declaring how much I love her.

Controlling my mouth, I let the ceremony continue. Knight says something about claiming his destiny. I think he’s quoting the fortune. Nova talks about the ‘pain of the past’ making the present even brighter. I’m too lost in Wendy’s eyes to process anything until the officiant says, “You may kiss the bride.”

It’s a natural command my body responds to. I lean forward, my brothers moving in at the same time. I know we planned this out in the rehearsal dinner, but plans don’t matter anymore. We go for it. We’re all in there, loving her with wild abandon in front of everyone because this is her wedding and she should get what she wants—men who truly, openly love her for herself.

And we live happily ever after!
