I shut my eyes tightly and pick up the test stick, feeling my hands shake as I grab it. Slowly, I open my eyes, peer at the result, and smile.
When Brandon comes home from a meeting, he finds a card on his plate at the dinner table. He eyes it curiously, then me.
“What’s this?” Now confusion clouds his bright eyes. “Is this a special occasion I didn’t know about? Or did know about but forgot?”
I laugh and wrap my arms around his waist, resting my head on his chest. “No, but it is a special occasion. Open the card.”
“Okay….” He slowly opens the envelope and pulls out the card. “A Father’s Day card?” He gazes at me in confusion, but I smile up at him silently, watching the realization dawn on him. The grin that spreads on his face, displaying those gorgeous dimples of his that I hope the baby growing inside me inherits, is so heartwarming and fills me with so much joy I almost burst. “Are you being serious?”
“Uh-huh,” I nod.
“Really, truly serious? You’re pregnant?”
“Yes.”
“How? I mean, I know how, obviously…. but…. what? We’re pregnant?” He tosses the card, lifts me up with his strong arms, and twirls me around the living room while laughing.
“We’re pregnant!” I cheer, framing his face with my hands and kissing him.
He sets me down carefully, patting his pockets like he’s looking for something. “Right. I need to go get ice cream, pickles, saltines, and what else? Ginger ale? Are you craving anything yet? What do you need? What can I do? Do you need a back rub? A foot massage?” He’s torn between stricken and excited, and I can only continue my smile.
This is why I love this man and why I married him. And why our life together with our family is going to be the most incredible thing this world has ever seen.
