I pull free of Angelo’s arms with a cry of excitement. He could hold me still while he gets himself the rest of the way out, but this is my head start.
I dash up the stairs, past Bobby, and grab the bag I’ve had sitting out ready for this very occasion. It contains multiple passports, several thousand dollars in cash, and a card linked to a private Swiss account containing funds siphoned from my work with Angelo.
“Bye,” Bobby calls out.
The next time he and I interact, we will be on opposite sides of a divide I created. I will be pitted against him as he and Angelo hunt me down and bring me to justice.
The beast inside me is no longer curled, coiled, or restrained. It is stretched out in a full run, expressing itself in all its terrible, wonderful glory.
I run, so that I might be caught, knowing that they will come for me, and knowing that when we are reunited, I will be reclaimed and made theirs anew.
I cannot wait.
