“Go on. She can’t have gotten far.” He gestured to the forest.
The dog wagged his tail a little, furtive and wary.
Mordred bit back his rage. He wanted to holler at the dog. But he would not understand. Nor would he have deserved it. But it was clear that even his Eod loved Gwen more than he loved Mordred. It would be too painful to have the mutt around as a reminder. “Go on, dog.” Unable to stomach looking at the creature any longer, he turned back to his keep and went to find his remaining two knights.
It was not hard to find them. They were all in their full suits of armor, standing in waiting in the throne room. Mordred did not miss them glancing at each other.
“My liege?” Galahad began. “What—”
“The Crystal is destroyed. The magic and the elementals are free.” He summoned Caliburn, which hovered in the air beside him. “For the moment.”
“What…are we going to do?” Percival asked, obviously hesitant to hear the answer.
“We do what we do best.” Mordred sneered. “We go to war.”
