“I’ll be better once she’s done. Who knew tonsils would wreak this much havoc on someone?”
I smile, pulling Mason down into the chairs.
“For Willow or you?”
“Me. You know Willow will be happy getting to eat popsicles all day.”
Mason’s hand comes down on my leg. His warmth spreads through me. I wrap my arms around his bicep.
“And getting all the attention? She’s a lucky little girl.”
“That she is,” Mason whispers into my hair, dropping a kiss there.
A pang cuts through my chest, as the call from earlier weighs heavy on my mind.
This summer was supposed to be about having fun and enjoying what time I had left before moving to Seattle.
I never thought that the crush I had on Mason Winchester would turn into this. Into something more.
My dreams were always bigger than this town. With a tumultuous childhood here, I didn’t plan on finding someone in Dixon.
Sure, a few fun flings here and there, but nothing serious. I didn’t want it. I want wings, not roots.
Now? Now everything is all twisted up in my head. The biggest opportunity is at my fingertips. In Seattle.
More than twelve hours away.
Sitting here with Mason is messing with my head.
Hewas supposed to be a fling.
Hewassupposedto betemporary.
Now, I can’t tell what I want him to be.
“Mr. Winchester?” The doctor comes into the waiting room. Mason flies up out of my hold.
“Is she out of surgery?”
He nods, a smile on his face. “Everything went beautifully. The nurses are getting her settled in her room, and they’ll be up to take you there in a few minutes.”
“Thanks, doc.” Mason shakes his hand before the doctor heads back between the swinging doors.
Mason bends over, blowing out a huge breath.
“See? Everything was fine.” I rub a hand over his back, trying to soothe away his lingering worries.
“Thank God.” Standing to his full height, Mason brings me flush with his body. I’m aware of every place we’re touching.
I don’t think. I act. Pressing up onto my tiptoes, I take his lips in a warm kiss. He sinks into my hold. My veins are buzzing as he holds me to him.
There’s nothing heated about this kiss. But it still sets my entire body on fire. Because this man is what I’ve always wanted.
“What the hell?” Gemma’s voice interrupts us.
“Oh, shit,” Mason whispers, taking a step back from me.
Spinning on my heel, I see Gemma standing in the doorway of the waiting room with a stuffed animal in her hand.
