“I didn’t do it on purpose,” I tell her as I grab a loose shirt and pair of leggings from the dresser.
“Oh yes you did! You told me I was going to go into labor and damn you, I did.”
“Yeah, but that wasn’t something I did.” I fight back a laugh knowing she’ll kill me if I let it lose. I would really like to see the birth of my children, so I choke back the merriment that creeps up on me.
She narrows her eyes at me as I help her dress. Then I’m helping her down the stairs as I yell for my brother and Harper. They’re going to want to be with us. We all pile into the car and Cade drives us to the hospital while Harley pants through contractions and cusses me with what little breath she has left in the back seat with me.
Twelve hours and one cesarean section later we have two beautiful baby boys that are small but healthy. And my wife who is a trooper and one more superwoman is resting beside me after feeding our little ones. She sleepily wakes and looks over to where I am sitting right by her bedside.
“Are the babies alright?”
“They’re sleeping.”
She smiles. “They’re beautiful.”
“Yes, they are…like their momma.” I take her hand and bring it to my mouth for a kiss. “Thank you, my sweet firecracker.”
“Why ‘thank you’?” She smiles at me and asks me completely unaware of all that she’s given me.
I try to think of the right words to tell this woman what she means to me, what she’s given me by just being in my life. There really are no words.
“For…everything. Thank you for being my everything, for giving me everything I could ever need or want in life, for loving me despite everything.”
She smiles at me and this time she’s the one who takes my hand and brings it up to kiss it. “You know, for the fun twin, you sure know just what to say to have my heart seriously trip over itself.”
“Only for you, my love, only for you.” I take her lips softly in a recreation of the promise I gave her when I married her - to love, honor, protect, and care for this amazing woman who brought life to my world. “I love you, my sweet firecracker.”
“And I love you, my fun twin.”
The End!
