“If you like, we can take you to her.”
“No, it’s fine, I will go get her and then go to the hospital.” He looked at me. “Do you have any suspects?” I tried to keep my face void of any emotion.
“Not at this time no. We will be continuing our investigation once we leave here.”
“I assume you will be talking tohisbrother?”
“We will be making contact to see if he might know anything but as he and his family were out of town at the time of the incident, then we won’t be formally interviewing him.”
“How convenient for him.” As if Felix knew what was coming, he jumped in before I could open my mouth.
“We thank you for your time. If there is anything you can think of that might help us with our investigation, please don’t hesitate to give us a call.” Turning my back to him, I walked away. I knew before coming here today, he would try and pin this on Austin. Returning to my truck in silence, I unlocked it and climbed in as I waited for Felix to return. When he did, he looked over at me.
“You good?”
“Only if I never have to speak to him again.”
“Noted. I will make sure I talk to her family alone.” Pulling out of the driveway, I headed for the hospital so that Felix could pick up his car. After I dropped him off, I messaged Austin to see where he was. When he told me that he had gone home, I asked him to stay there, I was coming over. Putting the truck in drive again, I made my way to his house. I couldn’t risk someone telling him before I did. I wasn’t sure how he was going to take this news, but I didn’t need for him to hear it while he was out.
Pulling into his driveway, I cut the engine and took the keys out. Getting out of my truck, I walked up the path, the door opening before I could knock.
“Brother, you look dead on your feet. Shouldn’t you be at home asleep?”
“I am headed there after this. I needed to talk to you first.” He stepped aside and let me past.
“Come on in, take a seat.” Stepping inside, he closed the door after me and lead me to his living room. He sat on his couch and looked over at me. “What’s on your mind.”
“I have some news, I’m not really sure how you are going to take it.”
“Okay…”
“I got a call while I was at the shop to go to the hospital. By the time I got there though, something had happened, complications they are saying. Holly was pronounced dead a few hours ago.” Austin opened his mouth to say something but closed it again. He sat back and just looked at me. “I’m sorry, I know we were never her biggest fan, but we never wanted this for her. We are all here if you need anything.”
“I’m not really sure what to say.”
“You don’t have to say anything, I wanted you to hear it from me so that you weren’t blindsided by it later.”
“Are they going to be questioning me?”
“They have some questions for you but just about if you would know of anyone who had it in for Holly or anything like that. Maybe have someone with you if you do talk to them though.” He nodded.
“Thanks, I will.”
“Are you gonna be okay?”
“I think so, just got to let this sink in. Thank you for telling me, I appreciate it. You should go home and get some sleep though. You look like you are gonna keel over any minute now.”
“Okay, but if you need us, please call.”
“I will, I promise.” I stood up and when he went to move, I held my hand up.
“Don’t get up, I will let myself out.” He sat back against the couch.
“See you later then.”
“Speak soon.” Letting myself out of the house, I went down to my truck, messaging Vannah that I was headed home and would see her after she finished work. I laid down in bed and crashed hard. I felt her lips against my cheek, pulling me from my sleep. When I opened my eyes, I noticed that it was dark outside.
“You’re home late.”
