“Just thinking about my brother.”
“Would he have her parents’ contact details?”
“Doubtful. He never spent time with them, and they always thought him to be lower class than they were. Her father would be easy to find though. Her mother, check the local spa and I am sure you will find her.”
“Did you know Miss Winters?”
“Yes, ma’am I did, not that we were close or anything.”
“Close or not, I am sorry for your loss.”
“Thank you.” Felix and I turned, walking away from the nurses’ station and back out of the hospital. “So, what happens now?”
“This is now a murder investigation. We need to get back to the club and find out who she was with. Someone knows and they need to start speaking.”
“What about her parents?”
“Unfortunately, if you know how to reach them and the hospital can’t, then we need to pay them a visit.” I let out a sigh.
“I was afraid you were gonna say that.” Rubbing my hands over my face, exhaustion washed over me.
“Why don’t I ride with you, we’ll go to the club and speak to her father, then you can drop me back here to pick up my car. After that, go home and get some sleep and we can look into the night club when you have rested. We had you in early this morning.”
“Alright, sounds like a plan.” Taking my car keys out of my pocket, I moved toward my truck and unlocked it. Getting in the driver’s side, I waited for Felix to get in before starting it up. I reached over, turning down the music a little more as I reversed out of my parking space and I headed for the local golf club. This time of day, he would be having lunch and possibly a game of golf with whiskey on the side. He let all his workers do the hard work while he kicked back.
“You know we don’t really think you or your family have anything to do with this right? We just had to cover all our bases.”
“I know and I would prefer that you called me into the station for questioning then either of my brothers, Belle, or Vannah. I will gladly take the brunt of all of that for them. I understand the history between Holly, Austin, and Belle so I get why you did what you had to do. I just know that neither of them would have thrown their lives away to do that.”
“We will have to talk to Austin to see if he knows anyone who might have had an issue with her.” I kept quiet about that. I wanted to tell him that it could be a long list, but I thought better of it.
“At least let me give him a heads-up that she didn’t make it so I can soften the blow. Things may not have ended the best between them, but it wasn’t always bad times for them.”
“I can allow that.” We drove the rest of the way in silence. Making our way along the driveway into the club, we parked and got out of my truck before making our way into the building.
“Hi, can I help you?” We took out our badges and held them up.
“Detectives De Marco and James, we are here to see one of your members. Jonathan Winters?”
“Just one moment please, I will see if he is in the dining room or if he is still out on the course.” She moved away from us and moved over to the desk. Picking up the phone, she watched us while she talked. Putting the phone down, she motioned for us to go over to the reception desk. “Mr. Winters is just finishing up a meeting. He will be right out.”
“Thank you, we appreciate your help.”
About ten minutes later, Jonathan finally came out of wherever he had been. The receptionist motioned to us, as he moved over to us with his hands in his pockets and a raised brow, I knew this wasn’t going to end well. I would definitely be walking away in anger, ready to punch him.
“You were looking for me, I believe.”
“Yes, Mr. Winters, we were. The hospital has asked us to reach out to you.” His eyes were on me as Felix spoke. We had crossed paths a few times when he made his feelings on his daughter dating someone who was beneath him clear. We made it clear that he was a dickhead and didn’t care what he thought. “It’s about your daughter, Holly.”
“What about her?” His gaze finally moved off me and to Felix.
“There was an incident at the club she was visiting. The police got a call saying someone had been found badly beaten. When they arrived on scene, your daughters’ belongings were found. She was transported to the hospital where there were complications and she was rushed into surgery to try and repair the damage. We are sorry to tell you that she didn’t make it.” Mr. Winters narrowed his eyes.
“No, that’s not possible.”
“We are really sorry for your loss, Mr. Winters. The hospital needs you to go down and make a formal identification on her body.”
“I need to tell her mother.”
