“Whose name was it?”
“Belle. So not only was I clearing my name but all of ours.”
“Is she okay?” asked Austin, I looked over at him.
“The last update we received said she regained consciousness but was in and out of surgery. She has a few broken ribs, severe bruising, and a concussion. They didn’t know the extent though until they did X-rays and an MRI to make sure there was no other damage.” He nodded. “Austin, please, do not go to her. I will keep you updated on her progress but none of us can be anywhere near her. Just because we were away, doesn’t take suspicion away from us. She did burn down Belle’s house and all.” He held his hands up.
“I wasn’t thinking anything of the sort. That mess is done. I just wanted to know if she was okay or not.” I nodded and kept Vannah close to me.
“Are you headed home now?” I looked down at Vannah’s question.
“No, I need to go back to the club. The security footage shows her with someone, but you don’t get a clear shot of him. If any of you get approached by police, do not speak to them without a lawyer.”
“Should we be concerned?”
“I honestly don’t know. The heat isn’t there at the moment which is the only reason I am allowed to stay on this case but that’s not to say it won’t come back if they don’t get suspects from the investigation. We can’t give them any reason to come back to us. Until we can talk to her again, there isn’t much else to go on which is why I am headed to the club again.” They nodded. It was Belle who spoke next.
“Where is Bianca?”
“Still awaiting trial. We thought of her but her whereabouts were accounted for. She isn’t allowed to leave the state right now.” After a little more discussion, Austin and Belle both went back to work, leaving me and Savannah alone. Leaning back against the counter, I kept her against me.
“How are you feeling?”
“I’m okay, nervous though because I am waiting for the morning sickness to start. Also thinking I may need to hire someone else to cover when I’m not here. I don’t want to put too much on Belle.”
“We can cross that bridge when we come to it. Just try and relax, Sug, we don’t need you stressed out.” She laid her head against my chest.
“I’m scared so I need to focus on something other than that.”
“Which is why we need to keep you as stress free as possible.” I massaged her neck until I felt her begin to relax.
“Do you have to go back to work?”
“Eventually yes but they knew I was coming here so I will call when I leave unless something comes up before then.” She lifted her head to look at me.
“I will grab something on my way home for dinner. I was preoccupied and didn’t take anything out. You’ll be dead on your feet by the time you get home tonight.”
“Sounds good to me, Sug, you grab whatever you feel like. I’m easy.”
“Oh, I know.” Before I could respond, she pressed her lips against mine. Moving my hands to rest on her waist, I held her close to me, wishing that neither of us were at work right now. She pulled away; her cheeks flushed red. “Something to think about at work later.”
“You say that like I don’t already.”
“No, I am pretty certain I know what you are like and have me in the back of your mind every waking moment.”
“Even when I am asleep, Sug.” I grinned and kissed her again. The sound of my phone ringing caused me to groan. “Why now?”
“Think of it as practice. You don’t think our son or daughter will cockblock you?” Pulling back, I shot her a look before pulling my phone out of my pocket.
“Detective James speaking.”
“James, we need you at the hospital.”
“On it.” I hung up and bent down to kiss Vannah again. “I gotta go. I will call you when I am on my way home. I love you.”
“I love you too, be safe.”
“Always.” I kissed her again before pulling away and making my way out to my truck. If I was being called to the hospital, then Holly must be out of surgery and able to talk. Now, hopefully we could get to the bottom of this and get us all out of the firing line. Getting in, I started my truck and headed in that direction.
