Cash
Ididn’t realize the time until I got Vannah’s text message. I was tired as hell running on so little sleep, but I was needed here. My family needed me here. While we were away, something had happened to Holly and she had ended up in hospital. She was only conscious long enough to be questioned at the scene, and the only name she had managed to say was Belle’s. I knew without a doubt that she was setting her up, and it wouldn’t stick as we were all away together. I had already spoken to the campground owner who, after telling us all where to go for waking him up, provided the footage that she was with us. Now we just had to find out who had actually done it. Knowing Holly though, that could be a freaking long list, but I had to keep my biased opinion out of this. That meant we had to piece together the events of the night in reverse. Something that was not easy because this girl stayed off the radar most of the time. It was why we couldn’t get anything on her and the fire at Belle’s without the confession from Bianca. Holly had the higher paying lawyer though, so we were still working on her for that when this happened. Bianca was still awaiting trial, so we knew it wasn’t her who attacked Holly. I was sitting at my desk, with a fresh mug of coffee thanks to Carmella and doing my best not to fall asleep as I watched the video from the club where Holly was attacked.
“Have you found anything yet?” I shook my head in response.
“A whole lot of nothing. It’s like she is a ghost and avoids the cameras. I always knew she was a fucking snake though.” Carmella laughed.
“Was she always that bad?”
“Yep! I am honestly surprised that she didn’t suck the life out of Austin.”
“Any longer and I think she may have.”
“How are you doing?”
“I’m okay, we dated a couple of times, it didn’t work out. No harm done.”
“I’m sorry, that may have been our bad. We pushed him before he was ready.”
“It’s no one’s fault, Cash, we tried it. Really, it’s fine.” Deciding to leave it, I hit play on the video again and went back to watching it. Sitting up, I took hold of the mouse and right-clicked. Zooming in, I saw Holly talking to someone. They had their back to the camera so I couldn’t tell who it was. I almost missed her, but she moved and I caught a glimpse of her. Checking the footage to see if I could see another angle on that section, I followed her as she moved through the club, the one she was with never showed their face.
“I’m gonna have to go down to the club. I am getting nothing from the footage.”
Carmella looked at her watch.
“Shouldn’t you call Savannah first? If you have been gone since some stupid hour this morning, she is going to be fretting.”
“True, she has already messaged. Might actually stop in on my way to the club.”
“Good thinking.”
Pushing my chair back from my desk, I stood up and stretched. Having been sitting for so long, my body was stiff. I looked over at the office that was supposed to be mine and shook my head. I don’t know why I was holding back moving in there, I just wasn’t ready. Moving over to my partner’s office. “Hey, Felix, I’m gonna head down to the club. There is someone on the video talking to the victim, I want to see if anyone else saw anything.”
“Need me to come with you?”
“Nah, I got this.”
“Stopping in to see the missus?” I chuckled.
“I was going to, yeah.”
“Go on, give me a call when you leave there, and I will meet you at the club.”
“Got it.” He went back to whatever it was he was doing. Taking the keys from my pocket, I went out and got into my truck. I would leave the car for him so he could come and meet me when I was done with Savannah.
Pulling up in the lot behind her shop, I cut the engine and got out. Heading over to the back door, I let myself in using my key and went in search of my girl. I found her talking to Austin. When she saw me, I could see the relief in her face, her shoulders relaxing as she moved over to me. Wrapping her arms around me, I let my hand rest on her neck.
“I am so glad you are okay!”
“I’m fine, Sug, I am sorry I didn’t text you back this morning. I was in a meeting with the Chief when you sent it and have been distracted since.”
“Are you okay? What happened? It’s been hours since you left.”
“Something happened over the weekend while we were gone. At first, I was questioned about my whereabouts.”
“Your whereabouts? What would you have to do with it?” Looking around, I saw Belle and Austin had now joined us.
“It’s Holly, she was at a club and got attacked when she was leaving. When the paramedics found her, she said a name before she lost consciousness.”
