“I know that look.” His voice was husky. It was a look he had seen many times over the years.
“Such a shame you have to go back to work after this. I can think of much better ways to spend the afternoon.” He let out a soft groan and bent down to kiss me.
“You kill me, Sug, you know that right?”
“Oh, I know. I’ve had years of practice.” Pulling back, he shook his head.
“Let’s go before you are late for your appointment.” I laughed and turned around to face the clinic, I pulled the door open and made my way over to the reception desk.
“Hi, Savannah Nash here for her appointment with Doctor Raymond.” The receptionist handed me a clipboard and pen.
“If you could please fill these out, Doctor Raymond will be right with you.” I took the clipboard and thanked her before going to take a seat with Cash. I had warned him what was coming and told him that he could leave after the ultrasound was done but he was determined to stay through the lot. He wanted to be at as many of these as he could, work permitted of course.
The good thing about living in a small town, meant that we didn’t have to wait long to see the doctor. Our appointment took longer than normal as this was my first time seeing her, so she needed to take mine and Cash’s medical histories down, so that she knew if she had to be on the lookout for anything, a urine test as well as checking my blood work, genetic carrier screening, STDs, a pap smear and a blood glucose test. She also took my height and weight measurements as well as my blood pressure, and a pelvic exam to confirm my pregnancy. Once we were done, we booked my next appointment for a month’s time. When Cash went back, he would make a note so that he could try and be there too.
After saying goodbye to him, I rang my real estate agent and set up a meeting with him. We needed to start looking at places to buy so that we could start the move. I didn’t want to be moving late in my pregnancy or worrying about it once baby was born. I also had to talk to him about renting out our current place and doing up that contract. He would have to come and take photos of the house to put it up on the website. If we were downsizing, then we were going to rent the house out with most of the furniture and just take what we needed. If they didn’t want it, we would just sell it or put it in storage. For the rest of the day though, I would just take advantage of the quiet and get some bookwork done. Not to mention we had the party for Cash this weekend at Ma’s place. Belle was silently freaking out but doing her best not to show it. Beau said he would get her out of it, but she was deciding to brave it instead. She had picked out a book to give her as a thank you gift for cooking for her date with Beau. Ma was harmless though unless you were Bianca or Holly.
I stopped at the supermarket on the way home and picked up some things to make for dinner. I wasn’t sure what time Cash would be home tonight. He was heading back to the club to try and find some more leads. So far, they were coming up empty and it was only a matter of time before Holly’s dad started pushing it on Austin, despite the fact that we were out of town. He was already pushing to get Cash taken off the investigation. Felix was hoping it didn’t come to that, we all were. He and his dad were talking about it the other night, as we had to give them a heads-up if shit hit the fan or people at the academy started talking.
Getting home, there was a van in my driveway. Raising a brow as I got out, I watched someone walking down from the front door. Folding my arms over my chest, I kept my keys in my hand.
“Can I help you?” He looked up from his clipboard when he heard my voice.
“Are you Savannah Nash?”
“Depends who’s asking?”
“Just here to deliver an order for you.” He held up his hands, giving me a warm smile. “Have a nice day, ma’am.”
“Same to you.” He got in his van and started it up. Pulling out, I waited until he had driven off before relaxing. Taking my shopping from the car, I walked up toward the front door. Seeing a long box sitting there, I unlocked the door and turned off the alarm. Putting my keys on the hook, I bent down and picked up the box. Carrying it to the kitchen and putting everything down on the counter. I quickly put the shopping away before turning my attention to the box.
Pulling on the red ribbon, I let it fall away before lifting the top of the box off. I dropped the lid at the sight before me; twelve long stem rainbow roses. I tried to blink away the tears. Taking the card from the box, I knew they could only come from one person.
Sug, there are no words to describe how much I love you. You have given me your heart and that was all I could ever ask for but today, seeing our baby was a feeling that I will never forget. You and baby are my entire world. I don’t know what I would do without you. I love you Savannah Nash. I hope you have your dress ready, this weekend, you become Savannah James.
There was no escaping the gasp that left me at those final words. I looked around for my phone, remembering that I hadn’t grabbed it from the car because I was distracted by the stranger in my drive. Putting the card in the box, I went to the front door and grabbed my keys. Running out to my car, I unlocked it and leant in to grab my phone. Locking it behind me, I pulled up Cash’s number. Work be damned. When he answered, I didn’t even give him a chance to speak.
“Cash James, what have you done?” He chuckled.
“Well, Savannah Nash, I am tired of waiting. Being with you today, made me see that it was way beyond time. I spoke to Ma and she is going to organize the cake you and I picked out. The dinner for me will now be a reception for us. Dad is going to get one of his mates who is a minister to perform the ceremony.”
“Who else knows?”
“Only the four of us. Beau, Belle, and Austin all think it’s just dinner.”
“We are supposed to be celebrating you!”
“Yes, and this is how I want to celebrate. I don’t want this big fuss over me. At least this way, the whole spotlight won’t be on me. I am pulling you into it too.”
“How can you still keep me on my toes after all these years?”
“Same way you do, Sug, it goes both ways. So, are you in?”
“Hell yeah I am! Don’t we need to visit the courthouse for our marriage license though?”
“We can do that on Friday. Shouldn’t take too long. I have made us an appointment.” I was absolutely speechless. He had thought of everything and as it happened, I had a dress upstairs that would work well for this occasion.
“Then let’s do this, baby. I’m game if you are.” Our conversation was interrupted by someone coming into his office, so he had to go. After saying goodbye, I went back into the house. Locking the door behind me, I went into the kitchen. I took my vase out of the cupboard, filled it with water, and sat it on the counter. Going to the laundry room, I retrieved my clippers from the cupboard of gardening tools, and returned to the kitchen. I cut a little off each stem and put the roses in the vase. Cleaning up the discarded stems, I put them in the box, watching out for the thorns and took the box out to the garbage. Taking the note when I went back in, I went upstairs to our bedroom. Walking into the wardrobe I took my keepsake box down and put the card in there. It was in the box that I had kept every card he had ever given me for a birthday or anniversary. A card from every bunch of flowers that he had ever sent to me. I got hold of a menu from the first restaurant that he took me to. I had photos of us from when we first started dating right up until now. Our whole relationship was in this box. The only thing missing was our baby’s ultrasound photo, but that time would come. If this house ever burnt down, this would be the one thing I saved. It meant more to me than any possession in this house. Everything else could be replaced. Running my hands over the photo on the box when I closed it, I remember the exact moment that it was taken. It was when he surprised me for my twenty-first birthday. We had a room full of people but got lost in each other. He still gave me that look to this very day. How I ever doubted us, I will never know. We would only get stronger from here.
