“Oh no, one of those kinds of conversations? Whose done what, then?” They moved to the table in the kitchen, Vannah and I following. The number of conversations we’d had around this table growing up, not just over dinner either, I had lost count. The good, the bad, and the ugly had been discussed here.
“It’s nothing bad, really.” I pulled out Vannah’s chair before taking a seat beside her. I couldn’t help but notice Pops doing the same for Ma. So many things I had picked up from him, I was glad to see that he was still doing them to this day. He would always walk into the room before Ma, not traditional but he always checked that it was safe for her before she went in. Being a cop had instilled this in all of us.
“Let us be the judge of that.”
“Okay well getting straight to the point, one of the detectives at the station put in for a transfer earlier this year so they have been looking for another one to fill his shoes. After months of long hours and working my ass off, they have given me the position.”
“Oh, Cash that is awesome news! Congratulations!” Ma got up and moved around to hug me from behind.
“Chip off the old block there, son.”
“Learnt everything from the best.” He wasn’t a man of many words, but his face always gave him away. When he closed his eyes, I knew there was something there. I was following in his footsteps and he knew one day, I would be running the station just as he had. “I wanted to tell you before someone else did. They are probably gonna start recruiting again and will hit the academy to see if there are any early candidates that have what it takes.”
“There are a few down there. Some will be lucky to make it out with a pass.” When Pop retired from the force, they asked if he would stay on and teach a few classes. Not wanting to be completely bored, he agreed. Sometimes he would drag me in there with him on my days off. Not that I minded. We both hated to just sit around and do nothing. I was like him in more ways than the other two were.
“We are proud of you, Cash, we really are.”
“I know, Ma, thank you. That means a lot to me.” She moved to sit back down.
“We need to celebrate. Maybe this weekend, you can all come around and we will do a big celebration.”
“We don’t need to, Ma, really. Dinner with the two of you is more than enough.”
“There is no getting out of this so don’t even try it.” Holding up my hands, I gave in before she got her way anyway.
“Fine, do what you feel you need to.”
“Smart boy.” Pop chuckled as I shook my head. Ma and Vannah started talking about everything, she too would be helping out with this.
“Wait a minute! I know what this is really about!” I accused Ma as she shot me a look. “You are doing this just so you can finally meet Belle, aren’t you?” She threw her hands up in the air.
“Well how else am I gonna do it? I can’t just show up at his place, now can I?”
“No but you could go down to see Vannah at the shop.” Ma turned to look at her.
“This is true, she works with me and soon Austin when his shop is finished.”
“How did I not know this already?”
“We didn’t want you to go and ambush her before she found her feet here.” She placed her hand over her chest.
“I would never!” A snort came from Pop’s direction.
“Yeah, love, you would have. There ain’t no fooling anyone with that.” She swatted him with her hand.
“Fine, but I just want to make sure she is better than that thing he last dated.” Before I could answer, Vannah jumped in.
“Oh, she is, Mama, I promise you that. They are polar opposites. She is just what Beau needs. Let’s leave it till the party to meet her though, get her used to the idea?”
“Fine, fine. I will leave it be for now.” Her and Vannah went back to their conversation about everything they needed to do beforehand, while Pops and I talked about the academy. I wanted to stay away from the topic of Holly for tonight. They didn’t need to worry about Austin right now, he didn’t need them watching him like a hawk either. After dinner and dessert, I all but carried Vannah out to the car. She was fast asleep by the time we got home so I carried her straight up to bed. She needed rest and I was so full of all the food, I felt that I could sleep for a month. I would sleep until my alarm went off in the morning though.
Chapter Ten
Savannah
Acouple of days after dinner with Cash’s parents, we had a doctor’s appointment, and it would be the first one he would be coming to with me. The first one was with my normal doctor for a blood test. Today I was meeting my OBGYN that she had referred me to. Cash was meeting me there because he’d had to go into work beforehand and would have to go back after we were done. Ada was back, so I got her to cover for me at the shop and took the day off. I didn’t need Cash worrying about me with everything he has on his plate, so I was making sure I took care of myself. Waiting out the front of the doctor’s office, his truck pulled into the parking lot and into the spot next to mine.
Watching as he got out and walked over to me, my eyes trailing down his body. He had always taken good care of himself. He loved a good burger and would drink with the boys whenever he got the chance, but he went to the gym to work it off. Thinking about what was underneath his uniform had me biting down on my lip. When he stopped in front of me, I glanced up to meet his eyes.
