“I am, I was over at Belle’s making a surprise for you.” She pressed her lips against mine before climbing over me and laying down beside me, her head resting on my chest.

“A surprise?”

“Mmmhm instead of ordering out, Belle made lasagna while I made brownies.” I shifted a little, pressing my lips to her head.

“What did I do to deserve this?”

“I just love you is all.” Her lips found mine in the dark.

“I love you too, Sug.” We laid there for a little bit longer, me just holding her before I got up, making her get up with me because we both needed to eat, her especially.

Chapter Six

Savannah

After lying in bed with Cash for a bit, I really didn’t want to move but he made me get up to eat at least, and then we could go back to bed. I was worried about him though because he was quiet through dinner. Yes, he had just woken up, but he was always fairly good at shaking it off. It was me who needed a good couple of hours and coffees before I could form a sentence.

“Are you okay? You seem awfully quiet tonight. How was the rest of your shift?” He let out a sigh before putting his knife and fork down.

“The call I got was from Felix to get me to meet him at the hospital, we were going to question Holly. By the time we got there though, she’d died. Telling Austin because I wanted him to hear it from me and not someone else fucking sucked. Especially after telling that asshole of a father of hers. He was quick to blame Austin for it. I know he is gonna be out for his blood because he won’t see reason.” Setting down my knife and fork, I got up and moved over to Cash, wrapping my arms around him.

“I’m sorry babe, I can’t imagine how hard that must have been.”

“I have had to tell a loved one before that someone didn’t make it, but to tell a member of my family and just leave him to process it on his own... I felt like fucking shit for walking out of there.”

“You needed to sleep, we could all see that you were dead on your feet when you came into the shop, add hearing that Holly was dead and dealing with the asshole would make that worse. The asshole alone would drain a normal person.”

“The worst part is, he didn’t even appear to care that we had just told him his daughter was dead. I’m not gonna sit here and pretend she was our best friend or anything, but it still wasn’t easy to hear when the nurse told us.” I nodded in understanding.

“I get it.” Cash pressed his lips against mine before patting his hand against my ass.

“Go eat, Sug, you need to make sure you are taking care of you and baby.”

“I am, love, I promise. I’m just worried about you.”

“I’m fine, we’ll relax on the couch or up in bed and hopefully I won’t get a call in the middle of the night again.”

“Do you think you will?” He shook his head.

“No, not unless something happens. I’ll go into the club tomorrow to see if I can find anything more from someone who works there. She was with someone; I could never see who though.”

“I don’t think she was seeing anyone after Austin.”

“I didn’t think she was, but I can’t say I kept track of her either.” We both picked up our knives and forks and started eating again. Silence falling around us once again. Once we were done, Cash got up and cleared the plates away. He poured me another drink before he started to wash up. I learnt a long time ago not to argue with him over this. If I cooked, then he would wash up so I could relax. We had a dishwasher but didn’t use it when it was just the two of us.

“I was thinking today…”

“Uh oh, that sounds dangerous,” he said, grinning at me as I leant over the counter and threw the dish towel at him.

“Ha, ha, ha. You aren’t funny, mister.” Shaking his head with a chuckle, he went back to washing up.

“Okay, Sug, what were you thinking?”

“Do you really think now is a good time to move with everything going on? You are just starting as detective now. I know your hours are supposed to be getting better, but I don’t want you to feel you have to add moving to your plate.” I took a drink from my glass to stop myself from rambling.

“Come on, you know me well enough to answer that question, Sug. If I didn’t want to move, I would have said something. I love you but we are way beyond me saying yes just to see you smile. I mean it is an added bonus but no, I am sure. We have Austin and Beau to help us, and I am sure Belle would help you pack if you needed it and I wasn’t here to pick up the slack.” Pulling out the plug and taking the hand towel to dry his hands, he moved over to the counter and leant on it, looking over at me. “You have a look and see if you like anything. Make an appointment with a realtor and let me know when you have made it for, and I will come and check them out with you. Then we can get moving on selling this one.”

“Or put it up for rent.”
