I take a step back, trying to look innocent as I shut down the bond’s communication spell. ‘I was brushing my hair. With my fingers. Do you know how hard that is?’ I point to my tangled locks for emphasis.

‘You risked my anger to brush your hair?’

I blink, offering an innocent smile. ‘I thought you wanted me to look better. Do you have a brush I could use?’

Callen’s bunched shoulders loosen. He sighs, shaking his head. ‘Come back to your cell. I still have that game I want to play with you.’

I loose a breath, glad he didn’t catch my tears. Mordecai. I can talk to him, but not subtly. I wonder how often the vampires will allow me to shower. I have to make sure my mate doesn’t come for me. He would be walking right into a trap.

I didn’t even get a chance to ask if everyone’s alive.

Dread curls my gut. This is a long, precarious game I’m playing. One I must play carefully if I’m going to both stay alive and protect my mate.

This time, he wants to protect me, but if he does, he’ll die.
