“What about after?” she asked. “You think you’ll want to go back to California?”

“Definitely. Dr. Roth’s recommendation will be good whenever I need it. But first, I have to visit my family. Last night, I called my mom and told her I’d be home for Thanksgiving. She said I’d be welcome, no matter what.”

“That’s wonderful. What about your dad?”

“Maybe she stood up to him? I don’t know. But I’m excited to see her and Cassie again. After the holidays, I’ll start looking for a place in Southern California. Near my girlfriend.”

“That would be perfect.” She’d have to tell her parents she was going to Turkey, and she’d need to notify her academic adviser. But those were minor details. The thought of more archaeology, more travel, and more time with Rick was too good to pass up.

Her future was unfolding like a wonderful map, full of mysterious islands and uncharted waters. She couldn’t wait to experience all of it.

“When we’re in Turkey, could we visit Ephesus?” she asked. “And Aphrodisias? They’re two of the most important sites in the ancient world.”

“We can do that.” He gave her an indulgent smile. “Don’t forget the city of Troy. I know how much you love The Iliad.”

“Yes. And maybe check out Istanbul? I’ve always wanted to go there.”

He leaned over and kissed her forehead. “Of course. This is just the beginning.”
