It wasn’t until we stormed the house and took everyone in there by complete surprise that I was finally convinced about Amelia telling the truth. Just like she had promised me, she hadn’t tipped Aldo off on anything. So he had no idea we were headed his way.
With no opportunity to run away like last time, we had the whole place cornered. Most of his men, who were only a handful anyway, had been overpowered. They tried to defend the place but we outnumbered them vastly. The idiots who charged towards us with guns blazing were shot and killed on the spot. The motto of the night was—no mercy. Just like Aldo had refused to show mercy to anyone who stood in his path.
Including his wife and the child that resulted from that marriage.
Amelia was fucked up and she had a very good reason to be. If Aldo was my old man, I would’ve popped myself a long time ago.
We knew Aldo was hiding somewhere in the house. In the basement or the attic, somewhere like that. I pictured him huddled in the corner with a gun in his hand, waiting to pull the trigger on anyone who came at him. But he wouldn’t have enough bullets in his weapon to hold back the number of men who were out for his blood tonight.
“Think we got the place covered,” Killian said when he found me by the door of the house. The shooting had ceased, at least for now. The Baron men had been pushed back and defeated. Aldo was the only one left to find and once we found him, it would all be over.
“Where is he?” I growled through clenched teeth.
“They’ve gone looking for him.”
“Is he still in the house?” I asked.
“We would’ve noticed if he tried to leave. He’s in there somewhere, we’ll find him,” Killian said.
There were no casualties on our side which was an achievement. Everybody went home to their women.
I didn’t know where I’d go.
“Listen, man, I was going to speak to you later about it, but I should just tell you now,” Killian continued.
“You don’t have to say it. It’s over. We don’t have to talk about it.”
“But I want to say it to you, brother.” Killian put a hand on my shoulder and nodded. “Nicely done tonight, man. I’d say we owe you one, but we don’t. You’re in this with us. You’re a part of this. This is your job.”
I nodded in agreement and Killian walked away.
I’d wasted so much time thinking about approval and acceptance from my family. And now I finally had it—on my own terms. I did something I was proud of, but the moment was lost because all I thought about was Amelia.
Why couldn’t she be just a regular ordinary chick at the bar that night? No drama. No secrets and lies.
But there wasn’t ordinary about Amelia. I should’ve known that all along.
While most of the others were inside the building trying to find Aldo, I stood outside keeping watch.
I figured it’d all be over in a few minutes. That was until I heard movement and ran in its direction with my gun ready.
“Stop! Don’t fuckin’ move!” I shouted as I ran towards the figure in the dark. Someone had tried making their escape from the house, but they’d stopped in their tracks when they heard me.
I wasn’t fucking around. I would’ve shot and killed whoever it was. None of us were taking any chances this time.
And as I got closer to the man who stood with his back facing me, I knew it was Aldo. He stood there with hunched shoulders.
“Keep your hands where I can see them. Turn the fuck around,” I growled.
He took a moment to follow my orders, but eventually did.
After all this time, I was finally standing face to face with this asshole.
Amelia’s father.
The realization struck me immediately.
What would do to him now? Kill him?
Did I have it in me to kill Amelia’s father? Her flesh and blood? Wouldn’t that be the ultimate betrayal?
“You wouldn’t hurt me, not when I tell you exactly who I am,” Aldo began in a slurred voice.
“You can save it, old man. I know you’re Amelia’s father. She knows it too. She and Reese are together now. They’re always going to have each other and they’ll never have you in their lives.”
Aldo’s eyes glew in the dark, he had that oily smirk on his face we’d all seen before and grown to despise. I wanted to squeeze my finger on the trigger and just end it, but the memory of Amelia’s tears staining her cheeks—stopped me.
Would she ever get over it if I killed her father?
“Well, then, I’m happy for her,” Aldo continued. “She has her sister.”
“Are you fuckin’ kidding me? You really want me to believe that you’re happy for her? For Reese? You’re a fuckin’ lunatic.”
