I wondered who had sunken their talons into Sloane.

“You have to go,” Beth choked out.

I grabbed Sloane’s wrist. “She’s right. We need to leave.”

Sloane ripped away from me. “Please, seriously consider it.”

Beth’s eyes said yes, but her head nodded toward the alleyway. “Get out of here. Now. And if this guy beside you is smart, he’ll act like your John while you’re coming out of this alleyway. People are watching everywhere. Don’t think for one second you’re not being watched.”

I saw a panic rush behind Sloane’s eyes for a split second and I knew she had gotten in way over her head. Nevertheless, I wrapped my arm around her and pulled her close, trying to make it look like she had just treated me to a good time as we made our way out of the alley. The bike engines grew closer and I knew we had to get to the privacy of my car. Otherwise, they’d all see my leather cut and we’d be fucking toast.

But, the feeling of Sloane’s body pressed so tightly against my own sent sparks crackling through the marrow of my bones.

How the hell did things get this fucked up?

Sloane

The second Finn wrapped his arm around me, I felt safe, and warm, and comforted. I hated the feeling, too. I hated that it was with him, and that I was wearing this outfit, and that his muscles teased me beneath his leather jacket and that stupid white t-shirt of his. And yet, I pressed against him and placed my hand on his chest, trying to make it seem as if he had picked me up for the evening.

I felt eyes on us as we emerged from the alleyway and I looked up at him so I wouldn’t look around.

“Those bikes are getting close,” I said with a smile on my face.

He directed me toward his car. “Get in, gorgeous. I got somewhere special to take you for tonight.”

I lowered my voice. “And what if I drove?”

He opened my car door. “Doesn’t matter, get in.”

I paused. “Sorry, but it matters to me.”

He tried to keep his face as stoic as possible. “You took a cab here. Cab number 1460, to be exact. So, if you really want people to know you don’t belong here, then by all means let’s keep arguing over your car that doesn’t exist.”

I sat down in the passenger’s seat after he opened the door for me. “You don’t control my life, just so you know.”

He rolled my eyes before slamming the door closed. And if he thought I couldn't hear him, he didn’t seem to act like it.

“Trust me, wouldn’t dream of caring enough to try,” he murmured.

And for some reason, his words stung more than they should have.

As the bikes grew closer, Finn rushed to get us the hell off Baron Street. The anger radiating off my skin was so palpable that I could have cooked a meal with it, but Finn didn’t seem to care. He cranked up the engine, pulled out of the parallel parking space and tore down the road.

Before I could stop myself, I opened my mouth again. “It’s just that you walk around thinking you can control me, and I really don’t--.”

“Enough!” Finn yelled.

His voice echoed so hard off the inside of the car that it stunned me into silence. Why was I arguing with him over this? What was it about him that made me so angry? Finn white-knuckled the steering wheel while I gathered my thoughts.

“Look,” I finally said. “I just can’t stand it when someone tries to control what I do.”

“Don’t you think you are doing that when it comes to Summer and Tanner?”

“No,” I said quickly. “I’m just trying to make sure that her and my niece are safe.”

“You do realize she is a grown ass adult right? Summer can make her own choices, and one of those fucking choices is to be with Tanner.”

“She’s making the wrong decision.”

“Will you fucking stop it with the making the wrong decision bullshit? Newsflash Sloane. But you are not Summer. You are not in her situation. You have no fucking idea what it is like to be in her situation.”

“But look what she is involved with Finn!” Sloane yelled. “Look at the illegal shit that she is bringing my niece into.”

“How many times do I have to tell you that we don’t do the illegal shit that the Black Flags do.”

“Says the biker with criminal record,” I said before I could stop myself. The second the words left my lips, I knew I shouldn’t have said them. I quickly looked over to Finn and I watched as he gripped the steering wheel tighter. We sat in silence for a few moments. Finally, Finn spoke.

“I get it, you hate being around me, and trust when I say that I absolutely cannot stand you without a shadow of a doubt. But, it’s my job to make sure you don’t die and it’s also my job to make sure you don’t throw us under the bus for some stupid shit just because you can. I get that you have a job, but so do I, and if you get yourself killed because you’re too prideful to get in a goddamn car when someone tells you to, so you don’t get shot from half a block away, then that’s on me. Got it? Your death means my death, except you’ll actually be dead and I’ll simply be left with nothing except a pot to fucking piss in. So, if you don’t mind, I’m tired of wasting my fucking breath on a girl that I’m honestly not sure even gives a flying fuck about the family she’s trying to save.”
