Jensen arches a brow. “Aside from moving things around with your mind and being a walking, talking GTECH sleeping pill, are there any other surprises I should know about?”
Another flash of memory washes over me. The soldiers in the lab passing out. Flash forward to the warehouse and an image of Jensen standing in front of me with guns locked and loaded when a group of Zodius attacked. They passed out, but he didn’t. Jensen isn’t like the other GTECHs, but he isn’t human either. I don’t know what he is—besides on top of me, making me crazy.
“You didn’t pass out.”
Adrenaline surges and I launch into a struggle, shoving and wiggling left and right, while pounding his rock-hard, too bare, too delicious chest that I have to get away from. “Let me up!”
“I have no clue why I don’t pass out when you put everyone else to sleep.” He shackles my wrists in front of me, holding me with ease. “Why is it that me not passing out like the other GTECHs is freaking you out, Layla? Because if I had, you’d either be dead or back in Julian’s clutches instead of here with me.”
“Instead, I ended up in a cheap motel with no memory of how I got here!” I shout at him, but damn him, he smells good. He feels good. He’s dangerous. I know the devious ways of Julian, his boss—his friend.
“You’re alive,” he reminds me.
“Because you need me,” I snap back. “Because Julian needs me.” The implication is that he’s working for Julian. He’s GTECH. Julian is GTECH. That’s a dangerous parallel when Julian intends to destroy humanity. And Jensen has managed to show up every time Julian is hunting me, with his charm and seduction in full glamour.
“I am not Zodius,” he clips out shortly.
“Yet, here I am,” I say, my tone scathing, “in bed with you, almost having sex, and barely remembering how it happened. Dreaming of you too, Jensen. I’m no fool. GTECHs have special skills. I know you’re messing with my dreams. I know—” I lose my words to the heat deepening in his eyes.
“You dreamed of me?”
Heat floods my cheeks. “I…yes, but—”
His eyes melt into mine a moment before he kisses me, a warm, wonderful, impossible-to-resist kiss seeping through to my very bones. Too soon, and yet not soon enough, he tears his mouth from mine.
“That’s why we woke up all over each other,” he murmurs softly. “Because we want each other and have since the moment we met fourteen years ago. If I’m brainwashing you, you’re doing the same to me.” He rolls off of me and leaves me shocked, panting, and wishing for that hard body back on top of mine. And angry. The man has just accused me of brainwashing him! He betrayed me, made me fear for him…made me trust him.
The picture lying on the floor flies across the room with a crash. The chairs at the table tumble to their backs. I know I’m doing it. I don’t know how, but I’m doing it, and I hope it makes him afraid, like I was on the street, fighting withdrawal.
He doesn’t react to the objects in the room. Instead, he simply stands there at the side of the bed facing me, wearing a dark expression made more foreboding by the shadow carving his jaw. The lamp on the nightstand crashes to the floor with the shatter of glass. A bag from the ground lands on the bed between us, several vials of ICE bouncing onto the mattress.
I swallow hard at the sight, my eyes lighting on Jensen’s, colliding in a standoff. Silence folds around us, our eyes locking in a stormy, erotically charged confrontation. I don’t dare trust him, and he knows I feel that way. Those vials of ICE will give me a few days’ freedom without consequence. He knows that too. It’s in that deep, hot stare of his.
Adrenaline pumps through me, liquid bubbling energy, my mind justifying the risk. This man is far more dangerous to me than anyone inside Zodius City. Because I want to trust him. Because I simply want him to the point of aching to feel him next to me. The intensity of the attraction is too much. It defies reason and supports brainwashing.
I have to get out of here, and I intend to make as much noise and cause as much trouble as it takes to do it. The police will come. The neighbors will complain. I lunge for the ICE.
Chapter six
Tad
By the time I finish with Iceman, my team of soldiers has used the GPS tracking device we covertly inserted into Layla’s arm to locate her—a precautionary measure taken when Julian deemed it necessary to keep her out of the sex camps.
I appear on the rooftop a mile from the motel where Jensen has holed up in hiding, a safe distance from the Renegades guarding the perimeter. A convoy of my men waits for me. Why I thought that Jensen would be dumb enough to take the woman to the Renegades’ highly sought after inner-city headquarters, I don’t know.
My hand goes into my pocket, feeling the vial of ICE there, hungering for a hit. It’s my secret addiction and the source of some unique abilities that I have yet to disclose to anyone. No one even knows ICE has an impact on GTECHs. They foolishly think it, like all drugs, has no effect on a GTECH. Even Julian doesn’t know, and I plan to keep it that way. I don’t want other GTECHs, neither Zodius nor Renegade, to dose with ICE. I want the upper hand, to stay in Julian’s sights, to become one of the leaders of the new world. ICE hits make me stronger than the average GTECH—faster too. But it’s my other abilities, the unique ones that really make dosing the ultimate fix, the ride I need to stay on top. My ability to—
“Sir,” the officer in charge addresses, breaking me out of my thoughts. “Red,” they call him, though I have no idea why and really don’t care. “The Renegades have brought in a good dozen reinforcements.”
I grimace. “It won’t take them long to figure out we’ve planted a GPS in her arm. Scout out every Renegade’s position around the perimeter and flank each with two of our men. Alert me when we’re ready, and be prepared to move on command.”
We can’t wait to act, or we’ll risk Jensen removing that device and escaping our radar. If Julian wouldn’t kill me for doing it, I would take that bitch myself and make sure she could never escape. Now there are no options, because once that tracking device is gone, it’s gone.
Layla Walters is going to have to die before she leaves that motel.
