We all watch with bated breath as Holly slowly lowers her foot.

“Good, now there’s a plank missing.”

“How wide is the gap?” Holly calls.

“It looks about as wide as the others.”

With a hand holding each wire that runs the length of the bridge, Holly slowly moves forward, trying to step over the hole.

“She’s not gonna clear it,” Cristina whispers.

“Looks good, babe,” Jace calls to her.

From below, we can see that Holly’s foot hasn’t cleared the hole, but Jace can’t from his vantage point on the other side of the bridge.

“Keep coming,” he assures her.

Holly lowers her foot and drops through the bridge. She screams as Jace’s platform pulls out from under him and he falls as well, both of them straight down.

Holly yanks off her blindfold and snaps, “You shoulda told me I had missed the step!”

“It looked fine from my end!”

She folds her arms, shaking her head in disgust. “God, Jace, even a five-year-old could’ve guided me better than you.”

Oh, so that’s how their relationship is.

“Isn’t it a little early for throwing insults?” Mina says with an uncomfortable laugh. When Holly just stares at her, Mina claps her hands. “Let’s get them out of those harnesses and get the last team up. That’s Rhett and Cristina.”

Out of the four teams that have gone, only two have cleared the bridge—Clarice and Beau, and Callie and Jeff.

Cristina stands in front of me, eyeing the bridge like it’s the black plague coming for her. I squeeze her shoulders gently. “You ready?”

She nods like she’s in a trance. I slowly spin her around until we’re facing, and lean down. “Cristina, are you sure? We don’t have to do this.”

“I’m fine.”

Her voice is weak, and it isn’t convincing me that she’s being honest. “You’re positive?”

“Yeah. You’re not going to let me fall.”

Those words make my stomach cramp. “Right,” I reply, my breath becoming shallow. “I’m not gonna let you.”

I swallow past a knot in my throat as I’m approached by a crew member with a harness.

Another crew member grabs Cristina. She starts to walk away, but I say, “Hey.”

“Yeah?”

“See you on the other side.”

She gives me a weak smile and then walks off to get harnessed up.

After I’m secured in the harness, I cross to the other side of the bridge, where Jace is heading back. He sees me, sneers, and says, “Let’s see if your money wins you first place in this one.”

I halt. Did he really just say that?

“Hey, man.”
