“I’ll . . .” What? Apologize? Explain I sleepwalk when I’m stressed? That it started after Sarah died? That I’ve seen therapists about it before?

“You’ll what?” Cristina asks gently, curious.

“Make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

She studies me, and I can tell she’s deciding whether or not to push. “No biggie. I don’t mind singing lullabies.”

My grip on the pillow loosens, and I scramble to catch it before it falls. “I’m sorry. What’s that?”

One corner of her mouth tips up. “I sang you a lullaby last night to calm you.”

That’s a first. “Did it work?”

“I’d say so. You were out in a couple of minutes.”

She sang to me. A song. After I crashed into her room and probably scared her half to death. Who is this woman, and Goddangit, but I’m so attracted to her right now.

“I should go.” I point back to my room. “We’ve got a challenge tonight, and—”

Her phone buzzes. She grabs it from the nightstand and opens it. “Mina. It’s a group text.”

With Cristina’s attention finally off me, I head into my room and grab my phone.

Good morning lovebirds! Challenge starts at 6 PM sharp. Report to the huge tent pitched on the resort’s back lawn. Dress casual—things might get messy!

“Baking,” Cristina says triumphantly. “It’s definitely baking.”

“Looks like it.” I lean on the doorframe, grateful to be focused on something besides the fact that I woke up entangled with her. “Strategy?”

“Burn everything?” But her voice lacks excitement, making me think she’s probably exhausted after I woke her up.

Guilt twists my stomach. “Cristina, I’m really—”

She waves me off. “Forget about it, okay? Maybe the doors will let us lock them tonight so it doesn’t happen again.”

For some reason, that makes my stomach sink. “Yeah, maybe. Hey, we can only hope, right?”

“I need to get ready.”

“Maybe we can grab some breakfast.”

She shakes her head. “Sorry. I need to get to the spa early.”

She’s blowing me off. Who could blame her? I didn’t even warn her that I sometimes sleepwalk. She had the pleasure of being surprised by it—and not in a good way.

“I’ll see you tonight, then.”

“Yeah, see you.”

I shut my connecting door and exhale. On the other side, I hear Cristina shut her door and flip the lock.

I flip mine, too, and stare at it for a second. If I’m gonna stay out of her room, I’ll need something stronger than a chair blocking me.

But I don’t have anything that will keep me from Cristina—only my own willpower. And the more time I spend with her, the less of it I’ll have.
