“The Bitty Beings.”
“You liar.” I tickle him.
He flinches and grabs my hands. “Is that how we’re gonna do things?”
“No, wait. I was only kidding.”
“Now you’re in for it.”
I try to protest, but Rhett grabs both my hands in his and tickles me until my sides ache, until I’m laughing and crying, tears streaming down my face.
When it’s over, he pulls me close and whispers, “I love you . . . Flame.”
A laugh jumps from my throat. “I love you, too, Flame.”
Rhett kisses me and says the words that make my heart soar. “And I love you, too, Cristina.”
“Not as much as I love you, Rhett Maddox.”
“That’s right. I love you more.”
But I seriously doubt he could love me any more than I already love him.
Chapter 36
Rhett
“Rhett, wake up. It’s almost eight.”
I could get used to this—her voice pulling me from sleep instead of nightmares, her warmth beside me instead of cold sheets and darker thoughts. We’ve been doing this for days now, alternating between our rooms, staying up too late doing things I’m not complaining about.
Every part of me feels lighter, like I’m soaring into outer space.
Sleeping through the night will do that to you. Though it also means I sleep through alarms.
“Rhett, you’ve got to get up.”
Cristina’s hair is gorgeously ruffled, tickling my collarbone. Her blue eyes are bright as she kisses me.
“You have to wake up.”
I grab her and pull her on top of me. “No. How about we stay here today?”
“I have a client in thirty minutes. I tried to wake you up a little bit ago, but you were sleeping like the dead.”
“Was I?”
I loosen my hold and she sits up. “You were.”
“Must be your effect on me.”
She smiles and starts to rise, and something catches my eye—the prescription bottle on my nightstand, exactly where I left it last night.
Unopened.
I sit up slowly, staring at it.
“You okay?”
