I gave Kai a chance to be honest with me, and he fucking lied. Because omitting the truth is still a fucking lie.

And you knew about Jack…

I should have listened to your warnings, taken them more seriously. But I didn’t put two and two together…

Jack and I quickly put our jackets on, but when we get outside, we see Jack’s truck is gone.

“Where’s Gen?”

“Goddamn it, Genevieve!”

I see Jack bending down, picking up the tracker he had in his truck, before throwing it to the ground.

I don’t have fucking time for this. I pull out my phone and dial Calli’s number and get no answer.

“We need to move.”

“How?” Jack says, pointing to where his truck should be. “And where the fuck is your truck?”

“Calli and Kai took it. Only one way we are going to catch up to her.”

The snow appears to have melted just enough to take the bike. I quickly run to the shed and pull it out, walking it over to Jack.

“Oh, hell no. I am not riding bitch seat.”

“Suck it the fuck up, princess. We need to move.”

CHAPTER 21 CALLI

My body is completely exhausted. We’ve literally been fucking all night and all morning—not that I’m complaining, although I am a bit sore.

“Hey, I’m gonna take a bath.”

“Would you like for me to join?”

I giggle. “Thanks but I think I need a break, I’m in need of some serious aftercare.”

“I can wash your back…” Kai wiggles his eyebrows at me.

“I don’t think I’ll be able to resist you. You stay here and find us a movie to watch.”

“Fine,” he says, playfully rolling over and pulling the blanket over his head.

The water runs hot as I sink into it, exhaling as the soreness melts away. I hope everything is okay at home, but honestly, I really needed this. Being there lately is like constantly having that dark cloud over my head feeling like something bad is always about to happen.

I sit in the water for a good twenty minutes until I nearly have heatstroke and feel comfortable enough to get out.

I head back into the bedroom, not bothering to put on any clothes, and see a bottle of over-the-counter painkillers and a glass of water placed on my nightstand. Kai looks to be out cold. I must’ve finally worn him out. That’s a first.

I take two of the painkillers and snuggle under the covers with him when I hear a ding.

I lean over and grab my phone on the nightstand. I see that I got a text from Gen:

Hey, can we meet up for coffee? I really need to talk to you.

I’m confused, but I agree. I give her the address to a coffee shop I saw driving here; it’s a good halfway point for the both of us. I hope everything is okay…

I put my phone back on the nightstand when I hear a knock at the door. Kai jumps up.
