I frown and shoot Zoe a “you can’t be serious” look. “I don’t need new clothes.”
“You have a closet full of ratty T-shirts, sweat-wicking leggings, and hoodies that should’ve been retired years ago. One: The climate is the literal opposite of Florida. Two: The dress code over there is . . . well, it’s actually a dress code. And three—”
I hold up a hand to cut her off. “Okay, okay. I get it. I need a few basics. But let’s not go crazy. I’m still a waitress on a budget.”
Zoe nods, but she doesn’t back down. From the predatory glint in her eye, I know she’s already mentally calculating how much she can sneak onto her own credit card before I notice.
Taking a deep breath, the scent of matcha and citrus swirling around me, I pull up the number Drew texted me earlier. My pulse ricochets wildly inside my chest, but for once, I don’t let the fear stop me.
I hit call. Here goes nothing.
“Hello?” Drew answers.
I take a steadying breath. “Hi, Drew. It’s Katie Keller.” My heart pounds so hard I’m surprised he can’t hear it. “I’ve made my decision.”
A beat passes.
“I’d love to accept your offer.”
His laugh is warm. “Brilliant. I was hoping you’d say that.”
“You were?”
“Yes, I was.” I hear the sound of an airport announcement in the background. “I’ll have my assistant email the paperwork on Monday. Look it over and let us know as soon as you’re able to start. We’ll take care of the rest when you arrive.”
“Thank you,” I whisper.
“Enjoy the rest of your weekend.”
“You too.
The call lasts exactly two minutes and ten seconds. It’s strange how a decision that changes your entire life can happen in less time than it takes to toast a bagel.
With Zoe still inside Sephora, I send a message to Max.
Katie
Hey Max, I’m ready to share that good news with you.
Katie:
I have a new coach! His name is Drew Russo.
Katie
And before you ask, yes. It’s a very big deal.
Katie
There’s a lot to explain. Let’s do a video chat when you’re free.
Katie
Good luck tomorrow.
I set my phone on the table and glance toward the entrance of Sephora. Max won’t see my messages until tomorrow.
A smile tugs at the corners of my mouth. I can’t wait to see his face when he finds out I’m moving to London.
