“And?” I want him to tell me if he’s alone or not.

“He’s alone.”

Bingo.

Lana suddenly taps on her mouth and yawns. “You’re finally done. That took you ages.”

“So I can go?” It’s almost adorable how hopeful he sounds.

Lana nods at Sara, and without missing a beat, she plunges the knife deep in his dick and slices it from end to tip. It didn’t take long, though, him being small and all.

He cries out in pain, and to stop his wailing, Lana stands behind him and snaps his neck.

“Good riddance.” Josh is the first one to say something, and we all agree. Incels like him shouldn’t walk this beautiful planet. Then he’s off to call the clean-up crew so they can chop Evan up into small pieces, as I don’t have time to decapitate him myself.

They all go inside, but I stop Lana by pulling her close to me.

“How weird is it that they knew each other for so many years?” She giggles in disbelief at my question.

“I know, right? Too bad baba burned all those letters.”

“I’m sad about that too, but look at it this way. They obviously thought we would’ve been a great pair.”

I want to kiss her, and she pushes me away. “We would’ve been a great pair?”

“We are the best pair,” I clarify, and she accepts it. I dodged a fucking bullet there.

“Let’s go inside; they’re all dying to hear the plans on how to attack Marijin Kutak.”

Chapter fifty

Lana

Last night, we mapped out Dario’s murder.

It took three hours, two bottles of whiskey, and a table covered in tacos and churros. The funny thing about a psychopath like Dario is the predictability. He believes that cooperation and love are diseases. He operates under the delusion that he is a solitary god, and expects a grand betrayal from an angry son and an angrier daughter.

He doesn't expect us to work together. At the restaurant, I saw in his eyes he would never understand that we care for each other.

By midnight, the plan is flawless and downright insulting. For a man who built his life on terror and psychological warfare, his ending will be nothing more than a glitch in the system.

Now it’s the morning, and we’re gearing up for a trip to Marijin Kutak. The only ones getting left behind are Hana and Josh. Those two are going to oversee everything from afar.

“If we even had two minutes to spare, I would’ve bent you over, little hummingbird.”

I look behind me and Noa’s leaning against the doorframe, looking like a whole meal. Dressed in light-absorbing matte black, mirroring what I’m wearing. Even though we want to seem and sound casual, we’re not stupid. The risk of losing our lives at the hands of that psychopath is not worth it.

“If you behave like a good boy today, I’m going to let you chase after me in your maze,” I promise him.

“Done fucking deal. Let’s go, I can hear Oliver already sharing some facts.”

“Oh my.” This is going to be a fun car ride.

Noa

Marijin Kutak is about forty minutes away, and I thought I would be nervous; on the contrary, I’m giddy.
