I most fucking-absolutely do. The sooner I learn all there is to Kill Feed and Dante’s position, the sooner I can get rid of the man. I have a stalker on my ass, and it is debatable whether he’ll truly kill me or not.
“I’ll ask you again,” I continue, tone steady. “What do you know about Kill Feed?”
“I don’t know anything.” Leo pulls a hand through his hair, slicking back stray strands.
“You’re lying.”
“I’m not!” His voice cracks, frustration bleeding through. “I heard about it the same way everyone else does. Online rumors with stupid edgelord crap. That’s it.”
“You hesitated.”
“Because it’s weird!” he snaps. “It’s weird that you even brought it up. And now this-” He gestures at the bushes, at me, at the entire absurdity of the situation. “You dragging me off a running path at six in the morning? That’s not normal, Adrian.”
Normal. Uhm.
I study him for a beat. He looks genuinely rattled. Sweat forming at his hairline and hands shaking just enough to notice.
If he’s acting, he’s very good. If he isn’t, then I’m out of leads.
The guy swallows. “Look,” he says, more controlled now. “If Xavier’s really dead… you need to go to the police. Not do this.”
I watch him.
Assessing micro-expressions, it’s time to kick this up a notch. “Xavier wasn’t poking around for fun,” I say, watching him closely. “He was working on a documentary.”
Leo goes still again.
“I think it had something to do with Phantom Productions,” I continue. “And I think Phantom and Kill Feed are connected.”
His brow furrows. “Why would you think that?”
Because I was there. “I saw a masked man kill Xavier,” I say plainly.
He blinks. But to my surprise, not of disbelief or even shock.
“He wore a ram skull mask,” I continue. “He’s a scare actor at Nightfall. Same event Phantom runs. He tried to kill me there too.”
Leo’s lips part and his eyes go dark, now sucking away the nervous tension that vibrated through his figure moments ago.
“He said I’d be a perfect fit for Kill Feed,” I add.
“Did he give you anything?”
Finally. I’ve reached a breakthrough. “Gave me a few bruises,” I say, cocking a brow.
He exhales slowly, eyes flicking from left to right as if making sure the forest isn’t listening. “Ah, shit. How much do you actually know?”
“Clearly not much, but I only need enough to kill the bastard.”
“Wow, you’re actually insane,” Leo replies, shaking his head in disbelief. “Look, Adrian, I’ll tell you what I know, but leave my name out of this. In fact, don’t ever come near me ever again.”
Chapter 19
Adrian
Phantom Productions is just the storefront. Kill Feed is the business. That much is fucking obvious now.
At the top sits Selene Whitlock. Every piece of information, every participant, every hunter, every game eventually leads back to her. Whether she’s pulling every string herself or simply standing at the center of the web doesn’t really matter. Nothing happens without her knowing.
