I could tell him all that, but settle with, “Because I know you’d kill every single person in that game without flinching.” I pause, eyes darkening. “And that was before I even knew you killed your father.”

Adrian shifts back in the stool, crossing his arms tighter. “You say that like you think I’d enjoy it.”

I hold his gaze. “Wouldn’t you?”

“No.”

That catches me off guard. Not because I think he’s innocent.

Jesus Christ, no.

But because he means it. Adrian doesn’t crave violence the way I do. For him it isn’t stimulation. It’s function.

Problem. Solution. Silence.

A laugh slips out of me before I can stop it, low and warm, and fuck, there’s something deeply wrong with how attractive I find him sitting there dissecting violence with the emotional range of a tax consultant.

“Fuck,” I mutter. “I would’ve loved to see you try and kill me during the games.”

Adrian’s mouth twitches. “You say that affectionately.”

“Baby, I say everything affectionately when it comes to you.”

Adrian smiles at that, a spark igniting for a mere moment in his irises. I push off the counter and round it again, grabbing the back of his chair and spinning it toward me. He doesn’t resist for even a second. If anything, he opens his knees slightly as I step between them, his hands settling on my hips before I even touch him.

I brace my palms on either side of him against the countertop and stare down into those cold green eyes that somehow keep undoing me piece by piece. His hair is still sleep-mussed and looking unfairly beautiful sitting in my kitchen while a storm brews outside the windows.

I kiss him before he can say anything else.

His mouth parts instantly under mine and the sound he lets out—small and soft and completely voluntary—goes straight to my head. I swallow it down with another kiss, sliding my hand into his hair as his fingers curl tighter against my hips.

Mine. All fucking mine.

I pull back slowly, breathing rougher now, and rest my forehead against his.

“Stay away from Kill Feed,” I say, all traces of teasing gone. “I mean it.”

Adrian watches me carefully.

My jaw works. “You take photos for Selene, fine. Take the money and take the experience. Then walk away.”

Rain cracks harder against the windows as I force myself to continue. “Not killing you after Xavier was sloppy enough already. If anyone finds out I kept a witness alive—”

“I know,” Adrian interrupts, voice soft and dare I say gentle.

A huff leaves me as I stare down at him, head still pressed to his. “Yeah,” I murmur. “Of course you do.

Chapter 29

Dante

“You’re that in love, huh?” Marcos states as he lets out a low huff, watching me smile at my phone.

A laugh slips out of me as I shove it into the back pocket of my black cargo pants. “Of course, man,” I say easily, the wipers clearing away the last drops of rain before I kill the engine of my Wrangler. “Wouldn’t be here if I wasn’t.”

Marcos shakes his head. “Can’t tell if you’re sarcastic or not.”

“That’s part of my charm.”
