“Sorry, Eira.” I let her go. “I’m not ready to tell them I might be pregnant when I don’t know if I am. I’m not even sure I’m ready to be pregnant in the first place.”

She put the pad aside again and took my hand.

“Then we should arrange a consultation. We may need more than the usual guidance in your case.”

“Do these sound like pregnancy symptoms to you?”

“They’re enough to warrant asking Physician Vale. He knows more of your circumstances than I do.”

I held her hand a little tighter, glad I had someone to ask and nervous about what he might tell me.

“Could I see him on my own? Without my mates knowing?”

“His visit will require security clearance, so Master Darius will know he’s coming. The reason for the consultation can remain private, and you may decide who is present.”

“I’ll tell them I need to see this—”

“Physician Vale. Thaddeus Vale.” Eira finished for me.

“I’ll tell them I’ll speak to them afterwards.”

“I’ll request that he come today.”

“Let me tell my mates first. I don’t want them to find out I need to see him from someone else.”

I sat there with my tea cooling between my hands. Yesterday, I’d been worrying about not seeing Lucien enough. Now I was sitting here wondering whether I might be pregnant.

I wasn’t sure whether I wanted to laugh, cry or be sick again, although knowing me, I’d probably end up doing all three.

Chapter 29

Lady Elowen

Iwas washing the supper dishes when Rafe came into the kitchen and lifted the lid from the pot beside the stove.

“That’s for tomorrow,” I said. “There’s bread on the board.”

He put the lid back and reached for the loaf, leaving me to finish washing up. I preferred having him on the other side of the kitchen. None of the three Alphas liked my scent, and I found theirs just as unpleasant.

“Have you left enough for yourself?” he asked.

“Yes.”

He cut some bread and took it into the sitting room. Once I’d dried my hands, I put the covered portions in the cooling unit, keeping mine behind the others so nobody would take it by mistake.

Mother would have been appalled to see me standing at a sink. Until I left home, I’d never cooked a meal or washed a plate. Tessa had helped me begin at Haven House, and since then I’d learned which foods went furthest, how to mend a shirt and which market sellers might lower their prices if I asked. My cooking still needed work, but there was something quietly satisfying about knowing tomorrow’s meals were ready because I had prepared them myself.

I carried the clean cloths into the sitting room and sat beside the work satchels near the door. I’d started putting a fresh cloth in each after seeing the state of the one Rafe kept taking to work.

“Your meals are in the cooling unit.”

“Thank you,” Tomas said.

Marek looked up from the strap he was repairing. “Which is mine?”

“They’re all the same.”

He returned to his work while I opened Rafe’s satchel and checked inside.
