“So you're not forcing them to spend time with me, then?” I asked, only half joking.

Eira looked faintly offended.

“Certainly not.”

I laughed.

Maybe this was just part of being mated to men like them.

“How long are Alaric and Lucien on call for?”

“For at least the next week, although that may change.”

“The whole week?”

“At present.”

That sounded like a lot. “So they could be called away at any time?”

“Their time is already fully committed for the week. Being on call means further matters requiring their personal attention may arise at any time.”

“So they're already busy, and they could get even busier?”

Eira smiled. “Precisely.”

“Right.”

I didn’t love that, but being on call wasn’t exactly strange for people with important jobs. Doctors did it. Soldiers did it. Mates who ran armies and intelligence services did it too, it seemed.

“What about Darius?”

“Master Darius will be working almost entirely from the Residence. A full security team is moving into the lower level today, and additional personnel will be stationed in the adjoining residences.”

“I thought families lived in those apartments. They don't exactly look like military barracks.”

“They did,” Eira said. “Master Leon has now acquired them, so they are vacant. They will serve as residences for the additional security personnel for the time being.”

I stopped walking.

“Wait... you said residences. How many did he buy?”

“Three on either side.”

“Why so many? How many soldiers is he expecting to move in?”

“I am not privy to how many will be based there. The masters would be better placed to explain the details, although I can find out for you if you prefer.”

“I can ask them.”

She nodded and carried on.

“Master Leon will be working partially from the Residence. Some of his staff will be based on the lower level, and we’re moving any meetings that can reasonably be held here to the Residence. He will still attend those which require his presence elsewhere.”

I smiled. “Are you stealing his time from his secretary as well?”

“I prefer the term protecting.”

“Eira, you are the best.”
