“About tonight—”

“Aggie!”

I have never been so happy to hear my best friend's voice.

Dora appears beside me.

Saved by the best friend.

“Ready?”

“Yes.”

Too loud.

Several people look at me.

I don't care.

I lower my voice.

“Very ready.”

Coach stops a few feet away. His smile disappears when he looks at Dora.

“I was talking to Maggie.”

Dora's eyebrows rise. Her gaze flicks toward me.

I can practically see the questions forming.

“Sorry, Coach Williams, I already have dinner plans,” I say quickly.

He looks at me.

“You didn't mention that.”

The words shouldn't bother me.

They do.

Like I owe him my schedule.

Like I should have informed him before making plans that don't include him.

“It slipped my mind.”

“Tomorrow, then.”

“Sorry, weekends are difficult for me.”

“Sunday night?”

“Busy getting ready for Monday classes.”

His jaw tightens.

Just for a second.
