“For now.”
There it is.
“For now?”
She grins.
“Tell me about your Wolf.”
My Wolf.
That warmth blooms inside me again. I try to suppress my smile.
Fail miserably.
“He's beautiful.”
Dora watches my face.
“Uh-huh.”
“Don't.”
“I'm not doing anything.”
“You're doing something.”
She makes a zipping motion across her lips.
I roll my eyes.
“He's enormous. Black fur. Smart. Like, really smart. I swear he understands everything I say.”
“Does he?”
“I think so.”
“And you aren't afraid of him?”
“No.”
The answer comes instantly. That surprises even me.
“No,” I repeat more softly. “Not at all.”
Dora studies me. I look down at the open book.
“I mean he saved me from face-planting in a pond. I-I feel safe with him.”
And there it is.
The truth.
I don't understand the Wolf.
I don't know where he comes from.
I don't know why he keeps finding me.
