“What? Why?”
“Because she wanted me. Wanted me to take her as my mate.”
I wait.
“What?”
“She was very forward, but I turned her down. See, I didn't love her.”
My humor disappears.
“Oh.”
“She believed my refusal humiliated her. So she decided that if I would not give her my heart, I would lose the right to give it to just anyone.”
My chest tightens. I look at the man standing beneath the full moon.
At the man.
At my Wolf.
And suddenly the word alone takes on an entirely different meaning.
“That's...”
“Like something out of a fairytale?”
“I was going to say bitchy, but sure, that works.”
That earns me the smallest smile.
Good.
I need that smile. Because this is starting to feel awfully freaking heavy.
“She bound me to my Wolf. I could walk the world in his form, but I could become a man only on the night of the full moon.”
I glance up.
The moon hangs enormous above us.
Then I look back at the ballroom.
Tonight.
Back to School Night.
Dinner.
I mentally count backward.
“Oh.”
“Yes.”
“You weren't avoiding me.”
“Never, my Enchantress.”
