Gabrielle starts sorting through a basket of hair combs and ties, then she combs through her sister’s hair. Leading with her right hand.
The more I watch this girl, the more I am convinced she’s right-handed.
But my wife is left-handed.
Sure, there are people who can use both hands naturally, or they’ve learned to do it for one reason or another. But this is odd.
My wife is left-handed through and through. There would have been no reason to swap from right to left.
Fuck, did I get the twins mixed up?
No, I definitely didn’t.
When Gabrielle parts Allegra’s hair, I spot something that makes my blood still.
Her birthmark. The little pink heart-shaped birthmark just between the nape of her neck and her hair.
The same birthmark I’ve admired on Gabrielle.
But this is Allegra.
Curious, I stop the video, track it back, and zoom in on Gabrielle.
I zoom in on the back of her head searching for her birthmark. Since her hair is wet, I should be able to see it with no problem.
But I can’t.
There’s nothing there but skin and wet hair. The only person with the birthmark I’m searching for is Allegra.
Allegra.
Left-handed.
Birthmark.
Fuck…
Ice filters into my veins. At first, I stare at the screen and the girl with the birthmark, sketching.
Then the truth dawns on me.
Allegra.
Allegra is my wife.
Not Gabrielle.
Left-handed.
Birthmark.
And the nightmares. She was calling for Gabrielle. Not herself.
When I thought it was strange that she would do that, I was right.
It was strange because she wasn’t calling for herself. That was my first clue that my wife isn’t the twin everybody thinks she is.
Sometimes when I call her by name, she pauses like a person who forgot something. Now I know why.
