Twenty-Nine

Check your inbox. Got the files, but a chunk of the medical records is missing. I’m still digging.

Cass.

Iscan the text and furrow my brows.

Missing medical records. That sounds suspicious as hell.

I slip my phone in my back pocket and open up my email inbox on my computer.

There’s an encrypted link. I click on it and tap in the password. Seconds later, the download begins.

I have a meeting in an hour with a shit ton of paperwork to get through before I see my clients, but I need to see what Cassian found. My wife’s past hasn’t left my mind.

Cassian always comes through for me, working as fast as superhumanly possible. I’m just eager. And impatient. I’ve checked my phone throughout the day, waiting to hear from him.

Today was important because I met with Kieran and his old man to discuss my allowances for using the Singapore port. I was aware of what the connection would do for the company, but I couldn’t get Gabrielle out of my head.

Old man Cormac flew over from Ireland himself just to oversee the meeting—and me—before I signed on the dotted line.

No surprise, the fucker wanted to assert his authority. He’s nothing like my father. That bastard only looks out for himself and rules his sons with an iron fist.

I don’t know why Kieran gives him so many allowances to upstage him. But to each their own. Even psychos have people they love and respect. And those people tend to be just as fucked up as they are.

The download opens, connecting me into a private cloud.

I whistle. Cassian sent over a fuck of a lot of intel. There are so many file folders it’s hard to imagine anything is missing.

Everything is labeled in date order, with different labels attached to each folder.

There are records from Gabrielle’s early life right through to files containing the most recent information about her. Those are mostly to do with the transfer of her inheritance when she turns twenty-one in a few weeks.

The medical history has me curious, so I open that first, hoping it will have the information from maybe her therapy sessions after the kidnapping. Records like these are better to give you insight into a person’s mind.

They also tell you things people wouldn’t outside the comfort of a therapy session that’s supposed to be strictly confidential to people like me.

I start looking through the records from the time of the kidnapping. Sure enough, that’s where the bulk of the files are missing. There are inconclusive hospital records and files that are incomplete.

It’s suspicious as fuck. The only time I’ve ever seen anything like this is when people are purposely hiding something.

Those like hardcore criminals who don’t want their details on file so the feds can’t track them. People living double lives. People who commit all sorts of crimes and want the evidence wiped.

The only person who could pull off something like this is Corrado. That slippery weasel. He always has something to hide and money enough to pad people’s pockets to do his bidding.

The question is: what does he have to hide? And how does it relate to his daughter?

It’s going to have something to do with his arrangement with the Bellandis.

Corrado was obsessed with making sure everything went through as planned.

I rummage through the available reports from the therapy sessions.
